I understand the that today(Saturday) the 1306 Paddington to Penzance hit a tree at Lavingdon near Westbury causing severe damage to the front power car cab.The tree crashed through the power cars cab side and exited through the windscreen luckily missing the driver
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
From another forum:43041 was the power car, dragged to Westbury by 59201. Driver only minor injuries. Arrival into Westbury over 400 late. Whole set has wheelflats so will all require attention, with 41 needing a new cab!

Sounds like the "wrong type of tree"...
Well, as you mention it....As i write we are having unseasonably strong winds outside. Normally, winds of this strength occur in late autumn to early spring, when the trees have shed their leaves. Coming now, when trees are fully foliaged, means that the branches are presenting much more resistance, and so there is a lot more pressure to withstand. Hence trees that one would expect to cope normally are being blown over or shedding branches.

well since the cab is made of fibreglass, any collision is going to look very bad.

edit: on second thoughts I guess I can see why it makes sense perhaps

So will this accident leave FGW short of operating stock for the summer?

What's the pretendolino doing these days?

Mmmm, electric traction in a non electified area could be interesting!

I think FGW'll have enough stock.

The pretendalino isn't electric, its whatever the loco pulling it is, as long as said loco can operate with a Mk3 DVT. Class 67s can, so thats probably what would happen if FGW hired it.

Yes, but a driver must travel in the 67 at all times whether propelling or not, because of the lack of remotely operated fire equipment which is only fitted in the WSMR 67's. It isn't really viable.

I imagine that FGW will either sub the power car, or replace the set.

I have seen a few powers cars at Llandore depot so i am guessing that FGW may have 1 or 2 spare which could be used to cover while the power car has a new cab fitted

Sounds like a naiive question, but who would manufacture a new HST cab? Have any new cabs been fitted since Privatisation?

The whole set will be out of use until the WSP is repaired and the tyres turned/ replaced.
As for a new cab, what happened to the moulds, did they end up at Crewe?

WSMR do it all the time, how do they get round the problem?

They are through wired so the driver in the DVT can operate the extinguishers in the loco.

Presumably the Pretendolino could still be operated as a standard set of loco hauled carriages. They could use it on a London - Penzance diagram since the route already has all of the facilities for loco hauled trains.

As stated here so I didnt see the point of repeating it ;)

Actually Vulcan quoted the answer to his own question.

Well GC are having new cabs for their 43/9s so someone somewhere is making them!

Also 43101 was pretty rotten and may have needed a new cab to become 43301... Could be wrong!

Can't 47/7's operate the pretendalino? They used to operate the push/pull services from Glasgow and Edinburgh back in the 80's.

Maybe we'll see 57/3's back in GW metal plus mk2/3 stock (if they are reliable enough)
