FGW HST Diversions - December 2010

Got my tickets booked for 29th Dec. Travelling from Swindon to Wesbury, Westbury to Waterloo and Paddington to Swindon.

What about the Bristol Temple Meads-Theale services? Are these likely to be HST's, or could they perhaps be operated by Class 165/166's?

A good question! Do 165s/166s still work into Bristol regularily? The Bristol-Bicester Town workings from a while back did, but have there been any workings since? Presumably the classes are still cleared to work to Bristol?

There hasn't been any 165's/166's into Bristol for many years now. About 2000/2001 was the last working when the Bristol-Oxford services were withdrawn. You sure there was any that went onto Bicester Town though? I thought they all terminated at Oxford.

That was 2003 under orders from the SRA. This also killed off any plans to repoen Corsham station.

I asked this question before but I was told that the class 165/166 are not cleared through trowbridge. It would make things a bit intersting though. Anyway are FGW rnning ay service to Twyford or are all the local stopping services rom Paddington terminating at Maidenhead

As the Twyford area is signalled from Reading, and the whole point of the closure is to fully transfer control to Didcot prior to the demolition of Reading signalling centre, I expect it cannot have any trains.

NRES as expected shows bustitution all day on the 29th Dec, and this is as flagged up on NR's website list of closures for the period:

"Between Maidenhead and Didcot Parkway via Reading
Between Reading and Basingstoke via Mortimer
Between Reading and Theale
Between Reading and Wokingham
Between Twyford and Henley-on-Thames"

The Oxford-Bristol services were withdrawn in May 2003 under instruction from the Strategic Rail Authority, who were apparently concerned about congestion between Bath and Bristol Temple Meads, as well as the slower 90 mph top speed compared to HSTs. Many of these trains either started at, or were extended to Bicester Town.

They wouldn't usually need to run HSTs for crew training, if they are being route conducted by another driver with route knowledge.

Have there actually been any other HST runs via Banbury, or into Waterloo, since the timing check runs discussed earlier? If there have been there hasn't been much discussion about it anywhere...

Thoses services will be HSTs, and should have an open Express Cafe.
The diagrams work out as there will be 2 different HSTs working the services from Phillips Marsh, with a swap taking place half-way ish through the day.

not had a HST in my home town since the Portsmouth to Blackpool services, pretty gutted i never got a shot of one at North Camp.
Be interesting to see how fast they travel between Woking and Basingstoke..

They'll travel within the same max speed limits as the normal traffic on the line, I think it's generally 100 on the fasts and 90 on the slows.

Unless, like a poster earlier in the thread on the same subject, you are hoping they'll take all the SWT services off for the duration and allow the speed restrictions to be ignored... :roll:

They aren't restricted to the slow lines, indeed the NR vehicle change makes clear that there was a possibility they'd have to be restricted to the fast lines.

can't wait to get pictures of them running through Farnborough, Fleet, Brookwood and Pirbright Curve.
They should replace the 159's on the Exeter route with HST's. i do miss 33, 47 and 50 traction on this route.
