If they were LEDs you could have them change colour. Warm, cold, red, blue, green, orange.

Imagine how cool that would be! Party train!!

(actually I am sure they probably are now mostly LED, perhaps even the tubes which now have LED replacement options - but they'll obviously be just one colour temperature).

Doesn't Airbus now use changeable lights on their newest planes? Not for a disco, but specifically to try and make people think it's morning/night etc.

The Z50000 class suburban trains in Paris ( probably the best modern units I've ever been on ) have lights which change colour frequently.

A350 too. Believe it's a customer option on the A330. It's also standard on the 787 and optional on the 737 (with Deluxe interior) and 777

Reason being on some long eastbound flights the window blinds are closed to allow the passengers to sleep when the night outside will be shortened by the aircraft flying against the time difference. The mood lighting is used to give an artificial sunrise rather then just switching the lights back on to full brightness :)

Maybe it's a precursor to how the new franchise will likely have a nondescript 'Great Western' branding rather than a First Group one with those words attached. It certainly fits in with the precedent of ScotRail and TSGN.

You forget that Transport Scotland forced Scotrail to rebrand, and TSGN was forced to rebrand by DfT.
