Currently in a bar in France and they have a Real Madrid game on and on the pitch side advert things is and an as for FGW suggesting Spaniards explore the south west by train.
Wouldn't it be better to advertise at a UK match?

Could probably be cheaper to advertise at matches abroad than it is in high-profile PL games.

Also, the game was on Sky Sports this evening, so British viewers probably saw the advertising. (The reason as to why those chose this match?)

Possibly aimed at all those Spanish fishermen whose boats are registered in UK ports, especially in the South-West? :D

Almost certainly for TV audiences, very few of the actual crowd can see advertising boards round the pitch.

The signage at the ground is probably blank with Sky adding the graphics on top for foreign feeds which would be bought by foreign advertisers such as FGW, while the local broadcaster would have different advertisers who had purchased airtime on the local network.

A similar technique was used during the 2013 Ashes, certain signage at the grounds in England was digitally blanked out and replaced by the sponsors of the Nine Network coverage.

I think you may be right, looking at pictures of the Bernabeu it has plain black boarding all round.

Out of interest, how much have Great Western blown on advertising in the last few months, and why now/is the return really going to be that much? For at least six weeks now I have seen their adverts plastered all over Underground train carriages and on escalator posters at stations and have seen several newspapers in which they have taken out full-page spreads. It's not even like it's small-scale advertising in the local rag so it can't have been that cheap.

Is it possible increased publicity could have been something DfT brought to the table in negotiations for the direct award? If so, it'd be hard to see First spending much time disagreeing with that clause over some of the other requests (like converting a First Class carriage on every train into Standard).

It is approaching the beginning of summer and therefore the high season for tourism in the south-west.

The collapse at Dawlish may be a part of this also - I can't imagine many media outlets would have seen the reopening as being equally newsworthy as the collapse, and therefore there may well be plenty of people across Britain who still have the perception that the line is closed.

Lots of adverts on local radio in Cornwall too, as well as all the local papers.
