This thread is quite timely for me so thanks to all the contributors.

My dad, who was heavily involved in the "FR" as we always call it, died last August and we're planning on marking a year since he died with a family trip on the railway.

We live near Retford, though can easily get to Doncaster and Sheffield (where my dad lived) so I'd already looked into a round robin, probably Doncaster/Sheffield to New Street and then the Cambrian Coast line to Porthmadog/Minfordd. I'd seen that the Blaenau to Llanduno Junciton line was out but it seems from post one here that it might be back up and running soon and then I'd come back via Chester and Stockport. The NR Journey Planner is not showing any Bus replacement on the 3rd August.

It looks do-able in a (long) day if I get the 06:12 from Sheffield. What are my best ticket options please and can I take advantage of any Round Robin?

Hello all, it was a really enjoyable day with brilliant weather. The ticket guy on our local couldn't find the Ffestiniog Round Robin ticket even with the code you supplied.

Bought our tickets from the ticket office at Piccadilly station and after buying a bacon barm and coffee we made our way to platform 11 for a 7.30 departure. Knowing we didn't have a lot of time between connections we also bought a Meal Deal to have enroute from Shrewsbury. There were a lot of people waiting for the 7.30 so when I saw 2 car 150 I feared the worst. Fortunately we got adjacent forward facing seats and although there were many standing more got off at Stockport than got on and then after Wilmslow nobody needed to stand.

The train was a TfW 150, one of whose engines was obviously struggling. The engine cut out each time the train stopped and at Wilmslow the guard announced we were only running on one engine and losing time so we would change trains at Crewe. Only a short (15 minute) wait at Crewe and a 175 turned up already half full. My mate and I managed to get forward facing adjacent seats and nobody seemed to be standing, so all was well.

Even with the delay we still had 30 minutes at Shrewsbuy. Our train to Porthmadog was scheduled to leave platform 5 at 9.30. I knew that the train originated from Birmingham International so was surprised to see a two car 158 already in the platform with its engines running but doors closed. A few minutes before 9.30 another two car 158 pulled in and I realised it was going to join up to the one already there. We didn't know which part would be going to Porthmadog but decided to get on the empty rear train as soon as the doors opened. It turned out to be the correct decision as our carriage soon filled up with people from the front part of the train, which was going to Aberystwyth. The journey to Machynleth is very scenic and we really enjoyed it. At Machynleth the front section went off and after a 10 minute wait we headed off for Dovey Junction.

The run up the Cambrian Coast is superb with the sea on one side and lovely, hilly country on the other. The train takes its time, which adds to the pleasure, stopping at many stations and request halts along the way.

We were running on time so decided to stay on to Porthmadog, as Belperpete recommended, rather than change at Minffordd. He was right as I doubt if we would have got two adjacent forward facing seats at Minffordd. I managed the walk in 20 minutes so we had time for a pint in the station bar. It's many years since I rode on the Ffestiniog and that was a return from Tan-y-Bwlch to Porthmadog as the line wasn't fully open in those days.

I really enjoyed the ride to Blaenau, but to be honest the journey from Dovey Junction to Porthmadog was the highlight for me.

The only part of the bus journey to Llandudno junction I enjoyed was the few glimpses of the railway running nearby including one section they were working on.

Couldn't see the fish and chip restaurant at Llandudno Junction so went in the Old Station Hotel across the road. Had a couple of pints, which tasted fine, and fish and chips. Strolled across from the pub at 17.20 to catch the 17.35 back to Manchester via Chester. As luck would have it the 17.17 (direct) was running a few minutes late so we jumped on that. The journey along the North Wales coast and up the Dee Estuary is quite pleasant but by the time we got to Warrington we were beginning to flag. I brightened up when I spotted 3 x 66s just before Warrington.

As we passed Deansgate on the run in to Manchster Oxford Road we passed a late running train that was headed for our home station. At Oxford Road I had a (temporary) hopeful moment when a 195 pulled into the bay (Platform 5) where our train would normally leave from. My hopes were dashed when they announced it was for Barrow in Furness. Our train finally pulled into another platform and was then held for 10 minutes to allow a late runner non-stopper to leave before us. Very tired as I was (I'm 74 and it was a long day, leaving home at 6.00am) I brightened up again as while waiting at Oxford Rd two freights passed, both pulled by 70s.

Thank you all again for your advice, it really helped to make our day more enjoyable.

The only regret (apart from the bus bit) was that this morning my brother sent me a text asking if I had seen any of the TfW 97s - which we hadn't. I Googled to see if I could find where they would be stabled and got a link to the visitmidwales website, which I wish I had found before we went. It gives a really good breakdown of the journey from Shrewsbury to Pwllheli, including sites of old stations, details of the present stations and halts en route and historical facts about lines which at one time had joined onto the Mid Wales Line - and it also says where the 97s are stabled at Shrewsbury.

cheers
Roy
Thanks for the Trip Report Roy, sounds a great day! Always good were there are no delays throwing the itinerary into disarray.

I had on my To Do List a Day Trip to either the WHR or FR and you've inspired me to plan and book one. I'm "starting" the RR at Crewe travelling anti-clockwise and "finishing" the RR at Shrewsbury. Just been to my local station Horsham (HRH), where I will start and end my journey, to purchase the RR ticket. The ticket clerk had never heard of it, but of course was happy to sell it, and was amazed at what it covered.

I've just planned and booked a trip based on using the Round Robin ticket. I used the RR Map to identify suitable (to my home station) start and end points on the circular route then used Trainsplit to find and book cheap tickets (mainly Advances - only way I could afford doing this trip). I was going to plan both a clockwise and anti-clockwise route but because the anti-clockwise route got me home by 23:00 I didn't both looking at a clockwise route. I started but abandoned costing the trip without using the RR as the numbers coming back didn't look promising.

If you're willing to go via Stockport on your way out and back, I can think of a combination of on-the-day tickets that'll cost £75 (with no railcard discounts). You could use either of these itineraries (for example):
Clockwise
0620 shf-spt 0726
0740 spt-shr 0847
0920 shr-mcn-ptm 1251

1335 ptm-bff 1445 on the Ffestiniog

1457 bff-llj 1555
1625 llj-ctr 1716
1735 ctr-cre 1754
1811 cre-spt 1835
1855 spt-shf 1935

Or anticlockwise
0620 shf-spt 0726
0751 spt-ctr 0912
0924 ctr-llj 1012
1034 llj-bff 1133

1135 bff-ptm 1245 on the Ffestiniog

1402 ptm-shr 1717
1751 shr-spt 1858
1927 spt-shf 2011
(Forgive the use of station codes throughout, I've just copy-pasted my notes and am a little short of time to retype them.)

The NR Journey Planner is not showing any Bus replacement on the 3rd August.

The Eisteddfod at Llanwrst begins on 3 Aug and NR were promising to have the line open again in July in time for it. The latest confirmation I can find of that is dated 1 July so it's looking hopeful! No specific date, but 29 July is the previous Monday...
The implication is that trains will be busy 3-10 August.

Also to note the most intensive FR timetable is RED Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday in July and August. This gives more options when things start going pear shaped...

NRE have Tuesday 30th July as train all the way so there must be some small level of confidence!

Sorry to bump the thread,

I've just bought this ticket for today - should it be issued as two separate tickets, with a start point of Manchester and a destination of Ffestiniog Round Robin?

Thanks as always :)

Hmmm, Looks like my original idea is not feasible as it's a circular ticket from the same start/end point. If I was to do it out from New Street, looks like I'd have to get a Chester to Sheffield, rather than Stockport to Sheffield for the return. probably will have to go with @krus_aragon' suggested itinerary.

I used it from Manchester last week, and went:

07:53 Picc to Crewe
08:47 Crewe to Chester
09:23 Chester to Llandudno Junction
10:28 Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog
11:35 Blaenau Ffestiniog to Minffordd
12:44 Minffordd to Pwllheli (bought a return for this)
13:28 Pwllheli to Dovey Junction
16:56 Dovey Junction to Aberystwyth (bought a return for this)
17:30 Aberyswyth to Shrewsbury
19:52 Shrewsbury to Piccadilly.

I tried to buy the Round Robin from my local, LNER station this morning but "computer says no" and no further help offered. Any clues as to where I can actually buy a ticket please?

Using the post from lyndhurst25 upthread I navigated to Brfares then wrote on a scrap of paper; Origin: Shrewsbury 4387, Destination: Ffest Roundrobin J293 and price £39.00. Handed this over to the Ticket Clerk at Horsham; he tapped away at his terminal, stared intently at it then asked me to put my card into the reader. He then asked me what on earth the ticket let you do, so I explained. Next time I'll take along the TfW RR map.

If you'd not tried that approach, could be worth doing.

Thanks - No, I naively just asked for the ticket!

They will instinctively look for the ticket in the rovers and rangers section, but you just need to prompt them to sell it from somewhere like Shrewsbury if you want the cheaper ticket, or Manchester if you want the more expensive one. The destination then needs to be Ffestiniog Round Robin, and the ticket should pop up.

Now the line to Blaneau Festiniog is open , I hope to do Liverpool/Chester/BF etc in anti-clockwise route next week (with senior railcard deduction for £25.75) Thanks for telling us that the 2 stations at Porthmadog involve a walk/bus; cant see this fact on website !! Will look at google maps.My aim is to get 1402 ATW to Shrewsbury. Looks to be a 158 ? Its a 3hr 15 min journey, do ATW have trolley service on the train ?

On Tuesday the 1402 AtW service Porthmadog to Birmingham International was a 2-car unit. Supposed to join with another 2-car unit at Machy but we were politely booted off and our unit shunted off towards the shed. Couldn't say what class as my hands were full with a Pint and getting into a good platform position so no photo. There was no trolly. I'd purchased food in Spooners to take on board on the assumption there'd be no trolley. Purchased beer at the Porthmadog station bar in a plastic "glass". Got some envious looks from some of the passengers! I did ask at the station bar if alcohol was allowed on board as when I visited Brecon Mountain Railway a few months ago the departure boards etc. make it clear that alcohol consumption on board is not allowed.

The walk from Harbour to Porthmadog is flat. The biggest problem at this time of year are ambling tourists, many with dogs, clogging up the pavements. But that's good for the local economy; so I just smiled and gave an English Apology every time somebody stopped in front of me or a dog was on the receiving end of my walking boots.

PS: Use Google Street View to do a virtual walk from Harbour to the AtW station. That way you can familiarise yourself with the route and useful landmarks. I do this all the time now, in conjunction with National Rail station maps, it saves a lot of time.

Yep - Following @E759's post, I played around on BRFares in the Rovers and Rangers section (as you would) before realising that you needed to put it in the "normal" fares section. I put in Stockpot to FFest and the fare appeared. Annoying that you can't but it online.

It's not technically a station so even though it's issued as a faux return ticket, because the three letter CRS code for 'Ffestiniog Round Robin' will more than likely start with an X, ticketing sites will ignore it and not allow tickets to be issued to that destination.

All bets are off, the potential dam collapse in Derbyshire has closed the Hope Valley Line (I only saw this by causally browsing the Sheffield Star website). I'm not going to bother with alternatives but still need to meet my Mum so will unfortunately have to drive.

Or a Welsh apology in Ynyscynhaiarn ... (the ancient name for Port)

:D

I’m laughing even though the comment went over my head :) :)
There's not much to go over anyone's head: it's just that the (very) old name for the place is one of those Welsh names that can seem unpronounceable to an English tongue.

(One could read another joke into it, namely that "cyn haiarn" is so ancient that it could be interpreted literally as pre-iron[age]. In fact, it's the name of the local saint.)
