Ffestiniog Rail Mileage

Looking at the Track Maps book for the line I think the mileage is

13m 57ch.

Anyone able to confirm this?

According to the General Appendix to the Rule Book, the distance is 13 miles 45 chains measured at the Water Tower Crossing. Note this is an internal document, not for publication.

13 miles 57 chains (as per Railway Track Diagrams - 7th edition) looks to be the difference between the very end of the line at Porthmadog and the buffer stop at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Mid platform distances will, necessarily, be slightly shorter, possibly around 13 miles 46 chains depending upon where exactly the measurement is taken from.

I was wondering whether the new FR is longer or shorter than the original railway. On the one hand the new line has the Dduallt loop and the rather less direct route on to Tan-y-Grisiau. On the other hand the old line was measured from a zero point at the entrance to the Welsh Slate Company's wharf on the west side of the Glaslyn (J I C Boyd has a map showing it, which I can post if anyone is interested) - that adds about 600 yards net - and of course the old line ran on a couple of hundred yards at the other end to the station at Duffws. Boyd gives the overall length of the line as 13 miles, 32 chains - which makes the new line slightly longer.

What do you mean by "original"? Deviations have been made almost since the line first opened. Various routes over the hill before the old Moelwyn tunnel was built. The Garnedd tunnel deviation. Various deviations to smooth the route out. Road and rail swapping sides at Penrhyn. Boston Lodge old loco shed reroute.

And then in the preservation era you have the realignment at Port, the deviation above Boston lodge, The Deviation, the new route at Glanypwll, and the new route through Blaenau.

From buffer stops at Porthmadog to buffer stops at Blaenau Ffestiniog was measured in c. 1990 as 13 miles 56 chains 5 yards.

I understand the buffer stops haven't moved since then.

I was part of the Railway Performance Society team that moved the mileposts to reflect the re-surveyed line with its then new yellow chainage markers. See various articles in FR Magazine.

I estimate 0m 05c for the centre of a 10 car train in platform 1 at Porthmadog and 13m 48c at Blaenau Ffestiniog
