The class 319/2s have a big pole coming down where the buffet used to be why is this and why only on these units?

The FCC 319s suffer from window etching... do the windows have protective film as the southern units rarely suffer from this

Southern 377s have First Class with no dividing door... on a busy service you get people standing and I know the conductor can declassify the section. Wouldn't this infuriate First Class ticket holders on both accounts?

Could southerns new order of trains replace 442s?

Do TPE 185s have doors between the vestibules stopping the cold from coming in given the intermittant doors and if not why not?

Isn't this where the feed from the Pantograph comes down? The 321/9s have a similar column in their Pantograph vehicle.

Aren't these the units that were built with no first class and then had it added in afterwards? If so I imagine that would be the reason (though actually I might being thinking of some SouthEastern units rather than Southern). As for infuriating the FC passengers you'd have to ask them ;) But I believe if FC is declassified they can get compensation.

Could southerns new order of trains replace 442s?

They could if they wanted. Or more accurately they could approach a ROSCO to finance the fleet and the DfT to make an agreement with the ROSCO that the new trains would have a job with Southern for xyz years. But I'm not sure of the point of this question? I mean any operator could procure a new fleet of trains if they wanted to.

Do TPE 185s have doors between the vestibules stopping the cold from coming in given the intermittant doors and if not why not?

They do not and I imagine the reason is to aid passenger circulation and to make it more comfortable for standees not being trapped in a small compartment (also a bit cheaper not having to install four sets of extra internal doors).

#1: This is where the pantograph is, so it contains wiring running from it to the transformers. 317s/321s/390s also have soemthing similar to this, although it looks a little different.

#2: Don't know.

#3: Yes, it would.

#4: They will do eventually I'm sure, once Thameslink 2000 is finished.

#5: No they don't, this is one of the problems with IC stock with doors at 1/3 and 2/3. The only train like this with said doors in place are the DMCO vehicle of GA's 3 car 170/2s. It is uncommon as it makes the cabin feel claustrophobic (apparently compartment stock never existed :P)

A question of my own: Now the 379s do Stan-Ex services and the 317/7s have been stored to (probably) be transferred to Northern, do GA's 317/5/6/8s now all operate as a common pool?

Adam :D

another one are the blue stripes being added to class 465/466s originally outshopped without the stripes as I am seeing a lot of them with stripes now...

also any plans to repaint the 375s as the wheelchair signs on them has badly faded. No repaint yet despite a refresh... some of these units have no grey stripe for some reason though. Neither do some of the 465s because they don't have covers which makes no sense! no traction covers= no stripe?

The other 319s all have this except it's squared off rather than in a pole format; it's also less noticable as it comes down between the back of two rows of seats.

No because standard class passengers do not stand in the first class part of the coach, as can be evidenced in this shot on a peak evening service out of London Bridge. On which I was the only person standing in first class and yes I did have a first class ticket..

So, are they heading for Northern and, if so, which side of the pennines?

That's not been confirmed but it's been suggested that they could end up in the North West on the newly electrified services. However there is nothing to officially confirm that this is definitely happening.

Blimey those passengers are very well disciplined (though I guess the threat of PF's will do that to you)!

I'm not sure you could PF someone unless there was an actual line drawn with a big notice warning people not to cross it - think compulsory ticket area. Besides not even a determined RPI would have got anywhere on that train, they would have been relegated to policing this invisible line like some unpaid and overpowered bloke/ lass from G4S. ;)

Doors in this position would adversely affect boarding and alighting times and so requiring slightly extended station dwell times. The doors have a timer which closes them automatically which will reduce the draughts if passengers cannot be bothered to close them in bad weather so reducing the load on the aircon.

I assume that by "Southern's new order of trains", the OP is referring to the 116+100 rather than the 40 tagged on to the 377/6 batch. Who knows what will hapoen with those?
