Fenny Stratford - Boston

I am having an absolute brain fade here and need some help.

I would like to go from Fenny Stratford to Boston and back on Saturday 23rd. I need to be in Boston by about 1300 and will leave about 1700. I want to pay as little as possible ( as a return is about £70!) and am sure that on another occasion i have used a rover to cut the cost but I am bowled if i can find it!

PS - what are the trains to Skegness like on a Saturday at this time of year?

Trainsplit.com identifies splits at Wellingborough & Leicester for £52.50 + fee.

Splitting at Bedford & Wellingborough will bring the fare down to £52.50. The only rover that will cover the whole journey is an East Midlands Rover which is £85.30 for the 3 in 7 version.

For travel via Bedford, trainsplit.com suggests a series of day returns with splits at Wellingborough and Leicester reducing the total to £52.50.

The rover comes in a 7-day version, and a 3 days in 7 version at £85.30.

The East Midlands Day Ranger covers a smaller area which does include much of the OP's journey.

on the rover: thanks. i think i only used the rover for some of the journey. It must have been some form of Lincolnshire rover

On the fare: i wonder if i can break it into smaller parcels of advances. The available trains into/out of Boston look limited.

There is a Lincolnshire Day Ranger for £28.30 that would cover you for Peterborough-Boston or Grantham-Boston or Nottingham-Boston, but booking now for this Saturday means that when you add on the Bletchley-Peterborough/Grantham/Nottingham, even with the best flexible/Advance splits on trainsplit.com, you are still paying over £52.50.

Bletchley - Euston £ 16

Kings Cross - Peterborough £ 19

Peterboro - Boston £ 17

I'm sure you can manage the walk between Euston & KX

Is the X5 coach an initial option? If so:

X5 Milton Keynes to Bedford - £8

Bedford to Nottingham advance single - £21.40 (on the date you requested but possibly not the actual service you'd need, you'll have to check this one)

Nottingham to Boston off-peak single - £16.30

Total : £45.70

EDIT : argh sorry, that's all single, the return price wouldn't be much more for the coachor the Nottingham to Boston stretch but it would for Bedford to Nottingham...

Ah then that's probably by far the cheapest!

X5 return MK to St Neots is £13.70
The standard off-peak return St Neots to Boston is £27.80
(I couldn't see any cheaper splits or tricks for that one)

Total : £41.50 return

St Neots to Boston on flexible return tickets split at Peterborough is £5 + £17 = £22, plus the return fare on the X5. However, the chances are that on the homeward journey you would get to St Neots after the departure of the last X5 going beyond Bedford, so you would need something other than the X5 to get you from Bedford to Fenny Stratford.

The £5 fare is a super offpeak which is only valid on weekend days.

Thanks - the last X5 from St Neots to MK is 1913 so cant be reached making the option not worth following up sadly. I do wish there were later through X5's rather than terminating them all at Bedford

The ticket seems to be valid via Nottingham, which is the better option. It gives you about 25 minutes wait at Nottingham. Connections via Peterborough and Spalding are bit pants, at the best of times, for travel towards Boston.

I know the feeling. Three loses in three for Grantham Town, including getting dumped out the FA Cup at the 2nd Qualifying round... Away at Altrincham tomorrow, so not expecting a win.

It may be valid via Spalding. A Lincolnshire Day ranger does commence at Stamford and is valid via Peterborough/Spalding/Sleaford or also Peterborough/Grantham/Sleaford towards Boston. With a bit more time to play with you could also go via Newark & Lincoln to Sleaford.
