Lol sorry guy's I'm a little tired today what I meant was I have (as of tomorrow) been on the only public class 20 tours in 2008 and 2009 so far
And yes that does look like a very lovely tour accept it was to skeggy you know the saying.

I have it on good authority 20309 and 37423 will be on the return leg tomorrow with 309 leading from carlisle, 423 Im lead to believe will be in power and will work the return leg throughout, im also told these locos are currently stabled outside Carlisle PSB ready for tomorrow.
Cheers for that, had heard 20309 & 37423 were ready at Carlisle but woondered which way round they would be.

Was an absolutely amazing tour many highlights amazing variety of traction and to do the S and C in the snow is purely once in a lifetime and currently editing my shots and must say there is a lot of them.
And the trip back with 309 and 423 was hellfire in every sense of the word and Birmingham New Street didn't know what hit it.

Yeah to be honest the lot in the front were trying to out do the noise produced by the loco's on the way back and failed majorly but yeah to be fair I didn't even mind the few long stops we had.

I'd say it's not once in a lifetime to do it in the snow, but the exact motive power and such perhaps so. What I've seen of the tour on the S+C looks like it would have been spectacular, more so than when I did it in 2008.
Glad the locos showed New Street what a proper train is again, it's not seen anything proper since 43166's last Valenta day in 2008 (well, except for the NMT I suppose). Indeed, we showed them on 16th December 2006 with 50049+031 what a proper train was, it's just not the same to go through there on a unit!
Glad the tour went well, let's hope we get another chance to do this sort of tour one day!

A most excellent day out well worth the money.I wasn't expecting to see much of the of the S&C on the way back but the moon shining on the snow covered hills and mountains was simply spectacular.Well done Spitfire ,DRS and WCRC for a most enjoyable day.
Sounds like a great day was had. Now I'm looking forward to the Celtic Growler on 7th March. Someone upthread claimed that not everyone worships syphons. I'm sorry? I don't understand what he could have meant.

Nearly everyone worships them...
Many of my best trips have involved class 37s. Up to Thurso and Wick two years before 37/4s were introduced was a belter. My favourite move was the 04:08 Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth on summer Saturdays, a positioning move for the morning Aber-Euston. This was reached from York on the legendary and much missed Shrewsbury Mail, a very useful move for a great variety of reasons. Shrewsbury station at half three in the morning crawling with noisy bashers in raptures about the syphons, and not many other people on the train. One awesome day we got off at Machynlleth, waited for an hour to catch the sprinter (first year of sprinters, but still no 37/4s) to Pwllheli, and the went back to Machynlleth/Aber to hit the Vale of Rheidol. Disgusted by the fare on the VoR we aborted and headed back to Mach behind the syphons and up to Fairbourne on another sprinter. Unbeknownst to us someone had changed the Fairbourne Railway from a proper 15" to some sort of toy, so we just walked along the line/dunes for a bit, sadly missing out on crossing the Barmouth Bridge on a loco-hauled train as a result of our desire to get some narrow gauge action. Finally came back through to Shrewsbury on the afternoon Pwllheli-Euston behind another pair of EE masterpieces. What a weekend!
Don't want to annoy the Chopperati on here though, so everyone kindly get back to talking about 20s please.

will cry at such a statement, the harsh reality is that it is true.Personally I'm not one of the 37 crowd to be honest, although if there is a 37 tour out there that sounds decent then I'll do it - unless of course it's 37/4s.

I know all about syphons being 37s, but I was making an attempt at humour by expressing faux misunderstanding of a statement that someone wouldn't worship syphons. I have to say I find it hard to imagine anyone not falling on their knees at the sight (and more especially, sound) of the beasts, but I suppose it's possible that they're not everyone's cup of tea! Still, some people are a bit weird. For example, having not had much to do with the railway since the mid-90s, it's a bit of a shock to come back and discover that there's such a thing as a duff basher!!! Such people may have existed back in the day, but they sure as hell kept their preferences to themselves if they did!

Thank you to all those who travelled with us on Saturday, I hope the 37 putting in an appearance didn't cause too much discomfort.
From an Audio point of view I think the 20 should've been next to the TSO with the 37 leading, that way poor old 309 wouldn't of been drowned out quite so much.
Nobody was cautioned at the crossing that I'm aware of, a couple were during the day, mainly when approaching Carlisle, too many really keen on photting 46115.
Thanks to Direct Rail Services for our loco's (especially 20303+304!), West Coast Railways for facilitating our tour and Netowrk Rail for finding us the all important 60mph pathway.

Hopefully one day they're going to come down my way so I've got less excuse to not try them out! And with a pair of 60mph 20s as well...

Ah well, it was a top day out - Spitfire are rapidly becoming my tour operator of choice...
What you doing on here at what I presume is about tea time for you over there, shouldn't you be nedding some American flying machines?
