Someone suggested Northern needing the 365s and a response was that training the drivers would make it more disruptive than useful.
So is there a way that 365s (or whatever was spare) could be a pool of temporary capacity enhancers supplied complete with drivers (and guards if necessary) to cover whilst a TOC has temporary issues?
You don’t want to rob Peter to pay Paul so first question would be availability - is there a cohort of passenger trained drivers spare? The retired who might fancy semi unretiring, those who have left/are leaving for whatever reason who would fancy the variety and lack of permanence, underused freight drivers....
How much training time is stock, and how much route? If a freight driver knows the route (and stock) how much extra do they need to know re stopping at stations?
Obviously you would need a travelling circus of maintainers too, but if the money was available is it possible to have a full service operation that can drop in to help out a TOC?

Obviously a simpler option would be temp drivers that were qualified on multiple stock types, but the unions might have more issues about them not being temporary.....

Similar questions over this have been raised on here before, and from those, no it wouldn't be possible.

" Is there a cohort of passenger trained drivers spare?" - no there isn't.
All drivers and guards would be required to have regular medicals and Rule Book examination.
All drivers and guards would be required to have full route knowledge of any routes they might be required to take.
A freight driver is very unlikely to sign the passenger units.

Can't speak as to the rest of it - but if freight drivers are parachuted in to driving passenger trains, who's driving the freight trains?
