Group Bourdon. Also known as the 'dots' test. It makes up the concentration part of the assessment for being recruited as a Driver. You are required to look at a page or computer screen filled with various patterns of dots and pick out the ones that are grouped in 4s.

It won't do. I can't remember how the tests are scored to determine pass or fail but they score it in an odd way. I'm sure someone who has sat them recently would be able to explain it.
I did it two weeks ago, I started a thread in the forum if you have a read it might answer some questions.. Doing the practice tho I noticed a constant improvement so it's defo worth the time doing again and again.. There was a guy doing it the same time I'd did that seemed to take forever, he still passed.. I believe they are after consistency rather than speed and loss of accuracy, basically over the 5 screens get similar results and not tail off ass you go through them.. If I can help any way please ask, I'm currently waiting a date for my structured interview

As far as I know, it's to do with pulleys, levers and gears.
There are a some excellent books you can purchase from Amazon which enable you to master these tests.
1. Mechanical Movements: Mechanisms and Devices by Henry T.Brown
2. Mechanical Aptitude and Spatial Relations Test by Learning Express or Joel Wiesen
Those are the books - they're not too expensive.
Worth a try if you want to pass
You need the 'Bop-It' toy for the fast reaction test.
Keep practising that till you have breached the record score.

You've not got long then to practice and get to grips with the mechanics
Remember, you need to pass all the tests.
You can't pass everything and not pass the mechanical test

I found the 2nd book rriley27 mentioned particularly useful as I lack knowledge of mechanics. Also found it useful to try and recreate "scenarios" of diagrams using household objects!
If practicing on the BopIt, do the voice box and the beat box and practice using it upside down / other side up for variety so you don't get too used to the levers being in the same place.
At our 2nd assessment centre, the 2 of us who'd practised on the BopIt / Wii got average passes. The 2 who hadn't got basic passes, which weren't enough for Northern Rail.

Did mine with FCC last year and they do do the mechanical test!
If you go on the SHL website there's a timed practise test you can do for free ... ONCE ... that will give you a feel for questions and show your aptitude in a summary at the end. Not as many gear, lever or pulley questions for me in December. Otherwise buy previously mentioned mechanical psychometric test books.

I'd say the last thing you want when something fails is a driver and guard that know which way cogs turn faffing with things they know nothing about
Atw have dropped the mechanical from their selection process btw..

Fault finding with a traction unit/loco is for drivers
