Hello All,
I'm new to this forum and have a assesment day on Thursday this week and was wondering what to expect?? I have seen posts regarding train driver assessments and was wondering if it will be the same for me?

Thanks for your help and any advice would be appreciated

It won't be driver assessments, more likely maths assessments, report writing (probably play a video and ask you to write a report on it) and possibly some customer service role play-usually involving some angry ticketless passenger. May have changed a bit but that's what it involved when I ran RPI test days a number of years ago.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply A driver.
Will they expect me to know how to tackle an angry ticketless person?? And how difficult is the maths test?? I'm really nervous and don't want to mess up....

Thanks in advance

If you know how to do rugby tackles and kung fu, you'll be just fine dealing with angry ticketless people. :)

(BTW, good luck!)

I think the maths test is fairly simple as far as I can remember. Basic arithmetic but I think they go into railcard discounts but give you sheets with the discount prices etc.

From what I remember they give you a zonal map and a sheet with prices of travel from zone to zone and ask things like how much would a ticket be at 0900 from xyz to uvw with a fictional railcard so you need to work out which zones they are traveling from/to, the price for that, the price with the relevant deduction from that railcard at that particular time of day etc. Hard to explain but it isn't that complicated and they don't expect you to know all the percentage discounts etc-they give you that on a seperate sheet.

This was what was done by the TOC I worked in hr for so it may not be the same for first group but probably a similar theme.

Hey Ash,

If your first assessment is for the RPI, then you should expect 3 assessments, first is the SCAAT test, next is Data Interpretation, and finally the Report Writing.

The SCAAT test is made up of 3 sub-tests and each has 3 sheets of small shapes all over A4 sheets. Each sheet has 25 X 25 shapes and is to be completed in 1 min per sheet. You are required to look out for any given target shapes and cross them out. It gets quite difficult as you progress.

The data interpretation is to check the validity of up to 10 travel documents in 5 mins.

The report writing is to write a report under 5 mins from some pictures given in the test room. All you need here is to understand each picture and observe the happenings in them.

Results would be out in 10 days. Enjoy!

Wow have they decided to include the SCATT testing for Revenue posts, if so that's ridiculous why would you need SCATT testing for a revenue/customer service position.

When I sat mine way back in 2008 the only tests I conducted were the Ticket Selling, Ticket Checking and the Paragraph Test, we also had a group role play exercise which was fairy easy.

Anywho good luck Ash, by the way did you apply for the position based in Brighton and when completing your application online did fill out a questionnaire?

Hello All,
Just a quick one to let you know what happened at the assessment/interview. When i arrived there were only 5 candidates and we had a customer service questionnaire that was multiple choose (pretty easy), then we had a group exercise that each person had to try and sell the group there certain product, again (pretty easy). the interview consisted of 10 competency based questions all around customer service.
I thought i had done well but got an email saying that they had a high standard of candidates and that although i performed to a high standard i didn't get the position :(. They have said that they will keep my details on file for six months and if another position arises i will be offered the position without having to attend another interview/assessment.
Does anyone know if this is the standard thanks but no thanks???

Sounds like you done pretty well at your interview else you would of just got a no thanks. Sounds like they were interested in you but if there were only 2 jobs available the overall points accumulated during the day may have been higher for another applicant.
