Who at FCC decides who can pass freely through their barriers and who has to be let through by staff ? ( a big issue at places like St.Albans and West Hampstead with unstaffed gatelines).

Also, is such discriminatory practice legal ?

Child paper tickets aren't allowed through FCC gatelines, s'all I know.

Nor are certain railcard holders - which is why I wondered if their practices are in breach of the DDA.

It has been discussed before, with various members of the forum experiencing the issues with barriers rejecting Railcards. Nothing new really. Usually it is removed after 10am which is more than reasonable, but FCC staff seem to leave it on all day.

I normally go straight up to the person on the gateline and show them my ticket, it’s easier as I don’t like using the machines; I also like to be able to keep the tickets that I have used for travel as mementos

Why is it it discriminatory? The automatic ticket barriers can't check your railcard or age, but a person on the gateline can.

Usually at Kings Cross I get declined with a Young Person's railcard, but I never get declined at Hertford North, or Welwyn Garden City. Just a but of a nuisance IMO, especially if my ticket has been checked on the train

Unstaffed baseline at West Hampstead is not for VIP passengers with a video link to someone to open the barriers. The lifts take any DDA passenger to the more staffed entrance.

Ultimately they are entitled to manually check tickets entering, leaving, and on the train if they want to.

Many human checkers will take tickets from you unless you need them to claim a refund of some sort

Yes they are, they just bleep 3 times - otherwise, they work the same as normal tickets. It's always funny when someone who's clearly an adult has bought a child ticket, not knowing what the barrier will do gets collared by staff!

I find Southern and SWT staff are very good at not doing this - and, to a lesser extent, FGW and XC gateline staff. ATW and VT staff don't really seem to care too much if you do. I simply tell them that I must keep the ticket for my records.

There aren't any XC gateline staff but they do have RPIs who can block entrances at some stations from time to time.

If you have a ticket for Hunstanton at Kings Lynn the FCC gates don't let you through, you have to be manually let through

Thameslink carnet tickets are programmed to not go through due to persistent fraudulent use (not filling in date on ticket) so you must produce ticket for inspection.
