apparently there is a big cost saving for fgw in switching to road deliveries rather than rail.
Sad to see another dawlish sea wall freight flow bite the dust following on from the reported end of the teigngrace log traffic.
Another example of why current structure of whole rail system needs shredding and start again. If Network (or British) Rail operated the depots and paid for the fuel then a large part of the cost of delivery by rail (track access) is effectively free - running one fuel delivery train per week will have nil effect on maintenance or renewal costs. Yet under current structure DBS has to pay variable access charge to NR and this is passed onto FGW who can then get delivery cheaper by road. You couldn't write it.
FGW operate Long Rock and SPM so they pay for the fuel
Do you know for a fact the diesel is still coming from a rail served depot? They can get diesel from a variety of sources, it doesn't have to come from Fawley at all...
I've no idea, but I don't think it is a given that most fuel moves around the country by rail.Which major fuel depots are not rail served?
