G'day everyone.

My wife and I are currently sat in the sunshine admiring Arten Gill viaduct. It's one of my favourite views of the railway. What's yours?

All suggestions are welcome.

Kind regards,

Mr and Mrs Richmond Commuter.

A few which spring to mind, in no particular order:

- The view of the east portal of Standedge Tunnel

- Edale signal box with the hills as a backdrop

- Looking down the abandoned Weatherhill incline towards Stanhope

- Lambley Viaduct on the Alston branch

- Anything around Marazion but in particular from St Michael's Mount.

Heading from Llandudno to Llandudno junction on a sunny day, arrive at Deganwy high tide on the Conwy estuary, sun glistening off the water, you can see the castle, the quayside, the town walls , if you look slightly over your shoulder puffin island and Anglesey in the distance and Conwy mountain as the backdrop to all of this.

I love home!

In no particular order:
  • a steam charter crossing Cyghordy viaduct on the Heart of Wales line (in theory - I've never actually seen anything more exciting than a 150 there)
  • the Fort William sleeper at the horseshoe curve north of Tyndrum (ditto except for it being a 156)
  • a Welsh Highland Garratt in Aberglaslyn pass or on the loops near Beddgelert
  • looking up at the Forth Bridge (and the road bridges) from near sea level at North Queensferry

Mine would have to be looking from Dent station up the valley of Dentdale to Arten Gill and Dent Head viaducts, more so when there's a steam charter coming down the line and you see the steam rising out of Blea Moors air vents. Never get tired of it!

Mine would be of the view towards Ribblehead viaduct from the end of the platform, particularly in the pitch black of a starry night as the train just about comes into view in the distance.

top 3 for me:

1. Ais Gill summit with Wild Boar Fell in the background
2. Cockwood Harbour
3. Tyne Bridges at Newcastle

View of is probably Harringworth Viaduct (not that I have ever been there in person!). On a similar note, I can only imagine what it must have been like to gaze up at Belah Viaduct.

View from is either, as mentioned above, going through the Lune Gorge on the WCML; or, if I am allowed to be general, going through the Flow Country north of Helmsdale.

A 2 car pacer pulling up on a heavily loaded peak time service at a massively congested platform

In all seriousness, I do enjoy the views of the WCML between Abington and Beattock, and between Penrith and Oxenholme! The voyager trains used on these lines have large windows so it's ideal for enjoying the line to its full potential!

Any stations with long sight lines are good as they highlight the size and busyness of the rail network too!

Too many to mention (many mentioned before) but here are a three of my favourites:

View from Royal Border Bridge on the ECML (plus the bits were the line runs close to the coast)
Morecambe bay on the WCML
Forth Bridge

Looking down onto the Cathedral and Castle in Durham as you cross the viaduct.

A few minutes later, passing the Angel of the North.

This amuses me; my other half goes into a rant every time we pass this either by train or road, moaning about how ugly it is. Personally I enjoy seeing the nearby Penshaw monument, although not sure if this is visible from the East Coast Main Line. It was definitely visible from the Leamside line however, and also from the Leamside to South Hylton disused line.

The West Coast Mainline between Lancaster and Glasgow - probably some of the best and most spectacular railway in the nation having done it for a BBC EU Referendum Youth Debate last May. Stunning sights all the way through.

The view across to Avonmouth just after leaving Patchway Station, on the way to the Severn Tunnel

Near Harrogate, the Crimple Viaduct from the valley floor - it just looks so delicate.

The Hope Valley line just as (if coming from Sheffield) the train rounds the bend to enter the Vale Of Edale.

The stretch through the Drumochter pass and up to Aviemore (great view of the Cairngorms).
Passing under the M25 heading to Euston from Manchester, means I am not far from home.
Passing the Lake district and Howgill fells.
The ECML where it runs along the coast passing through Barrow. That stretch of coast looks beautiful and sparsely populated.
The Brighton main line, passing over the Ouse viaduct, and south of Burgess Hill watching the South Downs get closer and closer, before entering the tunnel.

That's a great view - but to see the railway, looking at Durham viaduct from the Battery in Wharton Park, with the city and Cathedral as a backdrop, takes some beating :)

Too many... :)

WCML twisting through Oxenholme to Tebay
Far North Line hugging the North Sea coast Helmsdale - Golspie
The DLR all across the network for it's futuristic feel.
Cumbrian Coast line near Sellafield
West Highland Line after Cardross.

My local favourite: Arriving into Manchester Piccadilly from any direction.
