Pendolino has to be the best high speed train we have. Just a pity the infrastructure doesn't allow 140mph.

We don't really need trains doing that speed here. This country is small and there is not a great distance between towns and cities, compared to Germany and France for example.

Completely disagree with that statement, at the end of the day passengers want to get from a to b as fast as possible, particuarly commuters. These speeds could be reached easily on may lines for example the ECML and the new high speed rail links.

I think my favorite ones to work on have to be 150/1 and 150/2s. Or anything where there is two doors between me and the public!

Favourite motive power this end has been since the outset (bar a few weeks of 373 fanship taking over in 2006) in September 2003 the HST. It was what got me into rail and I've yet to find anything on the mainline that can beat it which can be gotten to all over the UK relatively easily and travel on relatively easily too.

If I could travel on them more easily, the 373s would be right up there but have to settle for a close second place. Voyagers recently took that spot but as documentated elsewhere, that's changed on a permanent basis.

HSTs (only been on NXEC, though :() 91 Mallards, 156s, 170s, 318s and 334s. I quite like Pendolinos (!) but I wouldn't say they were my favourite trains.

Least favourite is Class 320 and 322; never been on a 321 though so I try to keep an open mind about them.

I would say for me the Class 158/159. I know they're mainly looking a bit tired and tatty round the edges these days, but when loved and used for their intended purpose (interurban travel) they are a good solid unit, and very comfortable to travel on. In my opinion they kick the Class 170s for interurban travel with the way the doors are configured at the end of the carriages.
So far I would suggest the best refurb job is South West Trains, their units look brand new internally whilst still keeping the old comfortable original seating. I haven't had a chance to go on an EMT example yet....

I like the Class 455s and 444/450 Desiros used by South West Trains. Im not a big fan of the Class 458 as I find it's power/brake lever rather clumsy to use.

Going on looks, I like the 360, not too keen on the other desiros, i think the corridoor on the front doesnt look right. I also like 170, 222, 180, and the 91.
Going by pleasure to travel on, I used to love the GNER 91s, and as much as i love NXEC, its just not the same anymore. I do prefer the new NX livery though :D

158/9's, and the humble Pacer.

The West Yorkshire units - what a legend!

The 158 is easily the best. Smooth, quiet, comfortable, make a great sound and the windows relax you as the tinted bliss of nature passes by!

I also have a soft spot for the 185 - anagram of the 158.

ALSO, for any 66 bashers, let's not forget that they are successful, reliable, powerful and responsible for keeping freight on the railways.

I'll try to be very disciplined and give just one from each type of train. To be honest though this list changes over time. My favorite has included 20, 26, 31, 47, 57 at different times!

Diesel locomotive - C 37/4 in BR green with small yellow ends. It looks great with the nose at each end and then when they start up the sound makes them a clear winner in my opinion.
DMU - Scotrail C 170. Comfortable seating, quiet (for a DMU!), 2-1 first class and nice looks. I can't wait to see one in Saltire livery.
Electric - C 86, just for the looks and especially in rail blue livery with the cast metal BR lion and white roof.
Steam - Southern Merchant Navy Pacific. Since riding, in fact seeing one, for the first time two years ago on the Bluebell.
Foreign: North American F units together with stainless steel Budd coaches.
Coaches: Mark 3. I prefer the Mk2 externally and maybe even the Mk1 and it is a hard choice. However the Mk3 three is very comfortable and has set the standard. It still had comfortable seating (original seats), big windows, plenty of toilets and luggage space and looks good externally.

Eurostars leave them behind

No sorry - the interior is revolting, and there are bars across the windows restricting views and very uncomfortable to sleep against! The doors at only one end of the carriage is stupid too - passengers get confused when alighting/boarding at intermediate stations.

wow, that's nice! I like the style of it and the interior looks pretty comfortable too. I'll swap my C170 for that.

Ive never been a fan of DMU type units, but seeing a picture of this for the first time was like love at first sight! So sleek and beautiful. Mind you, it was probably a sod to ride on. As soon as I can Im off to Didcot to see one of the few preserved ones left.

I am going to copy victorialine67 and do this like he did.

Diesel locomotive - Probably class 47's in Intercity Swallow Livery.
DMU - Definatly has to be class 121's in any of the current liveries.
Electric - Class 86's in Intercity Swallow livery
Steam - Re-built Battle of britain class locomotives.
Foreign:The German V200 class (the warships)
Coaches: Has to be the Cargo-d MK2's

Having grown up on the GEML with the 321s , mine has to be the 321. But also the high speed 395s as i use both weekly.

The 321 is a good workhorse and the 395 is just a fantastic train for the 21st century.
