I'm not sure myself but it I always thought its something to do with the wheels but i know this is probably wrong

Yes you are. The kit that drives the train makes the weird noise. Someone else with the right technological words will be along shortly.

My favourite single train is 156468, it has really comfy seats (by Northern standards) and it's almost as if it follows me around I see it so often :?

I agree Northern Rail seats are reasonable comfortable on the 158 and 155's (not travelled on 156 but i guess it's similiar to a 155) and generally around my area there very slow but are comfortable for short-term journeys

I quite like 60081! shame it is highly unlikely to turn a wheel under its own power again.

My overall favorite train is the Class 465 'Networker', but I love CIGs, VEPs, CEPs, EPBs, 'Thumpers', and anything SR.

I also have a thing for the Class 309 'Clactons' they have a lot of personality to them and seemed great units, but also seemed under-appreciated by enthusiasts.

But I mainly like EMUs if no ones guessed!

Mine has to be the 91s mk4s and dvt,EMT 158, hst and meds. As for locos has to be the 31 and 47. I dont like the look of the 20s but they are pretty easy to drive.

Like the age question in another thread you can tell the age of people in this thread by what they like (please dont take this the wrong way).

For me nothing can beat a Class 45/0 steam heat with 9/10 mk1 coaches in blue/grey livery. BR blue and grey was the best livery.
With Electric units i liked the old slam door stock 302s, 305s, 307s mostly because my mum and dad took us to Southend regually and i use to spend lots of time at my grandmothers house near Northumberland park station. As someone else has mentioned the Clacton units were a class apart. For modern units i think the best are those that are work horses like the 313s and 317s.
For DMUs the best were the 115 Marylebone units.
