Favourite stations

Maybe a thread has been made in the past of this sort before, but what are your favourite stations?

Mine, in no particular order, are as follows:

Leeds
York
London St Pancras
London King's X
Leicester
Peterborough
Bedford
Derby
Nottingham

I don't think by the way, that there is a single station in the country that I have been to that I have disliked, so I like all stations really. Just the ones listed here are my top favourites.

People seem to really like London St Pancras and Birmingham Moor Street.

I like St Neots, as I use it a lot, East Croydon from both childhood memories, current memories and just the amount of 377's and Southern activity, Liverpool Street, cause its in the City, lots of platforms with mixed rolling stock, new Desiros and Electrostars, LHCS, the BREL trains etc, Stafford, for the variety of stock (I live away from the WCML and regular freight) so even though its often Voyagers and Pendo's I don't see them to regularly, so its nice for me I also like Bank station, cause the W&C platforms remind me of NSE, the variety of lines, its in the city, the DLR is underground, it's quiet modern. I also like Crewe again for variety and also stock I don't live near, and I like Fenchurch Street, for the stock and destinations served, and also its location and existence in the middle of the city. Its small and quaint, but also busy in the city, and once inside you could be anywhere Victoria is also a favorite of mine, and I think the Chatham side looks particularly good now that the trainshed is all fixed up . To be honest, if I can sit on the platform with a bottle of ribena and watch trains go past in all classes and colours then I'm happy

Birmingham New Street: the underground aspect shelters you from the sun but it's not totally underground so it's not stuffy like the tube, it's easy to navigate despite the number of platforms and Phil Sayer.

Four Oaks: Quite sparse but it's a nice, open station which is quiet. OK, it only sees 323s but I don't mind them.

Baker St Tube station: Only partially underground and plenty of good connections

Ahh I'll let you off then :P I like Baker Street at the SSL platforms in particular, feels like an important junction station akin to a mainline one

Dewsbury is among my favourites- Mainly due to the pub, but also since the refurb there's a nice blend between the traditional architecture and the modern additions. The only real negatives are the lack of passing freight and the fact that it's in Dewsbury!

I'm fond of Baker Street on the LU. I'll never forget having to change there and grabbing coffees every morning way back in 97' when I was on the sites. The first high street coffees I'd ever tasted!

In terms of quieter stations, my favourites are those that are (or seem to be) larger and better-built than they strictly need to be for the number of trains/passengers which they get - the two examples I can remember are Stirling and Perth.

For busier stations, King's Cross is probably my favourite - although St Pancras looks nicer I somehow prefer King's Cross.

My least favourite is Gatwick Airport - its too small, and doesn't make up for this by looking good! Also don't like that it's flagship service is sold as an "Express" but averages under 60mph (yes, I realise it is technically an express because it doesn't stop anywhere - but you expect an express to be fast) , and the fact that it serves a main London airport but doesn't take Oyster Cards.

Off topic, but still:
There's six airports with regular* passenger services styling themselves as "London"

Four of these have "mainline" railway stations as part of the airport complex. One has a parkway/shuttle bus arrangement. One is on the DLR.

Only two, Heathrow and City, can you use Oyster to get to- and with Heathrow, you can't use Oyster on the "mainline" rail link, just the (slower) Underground one.

Funnily enough, only Heathrow and City are within London.

Basically, your "no Oyster to Gatwick" complaint is ridiculous, as you can't use Oyster on Heathrow Express/Connect (to the airport) and Gatwick is a long way out of London.

*Heathrow, City, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Southend. There's also Oxford, but that's ludicrous. Even Southend is pushing it rather.

Basically, your "no Oyster to Gatwick" complaint is ridiculous, as you can't use Oyster on Heathrow Express/Connect (to the airport) and Gatwick is a long way out of London.

At the risk of taking this off-topic as you say, the fact that Heathrow doesn't accept it doesn't mean that its OK for Gatwick to not accept it either - rather it means that its a poor showing that neither do.

I think that all the airports marketed as "London" should accept Oyster - it doesn't seem fair for the airport to get the benefits of selling itself as being within London without customers getting the services they should be able to expect within London - this would mean the airport operator paying for the installation of Oyster at the stations which serve their airports.

York is nice under the roof but platforms 9-11 aren't the most inspiring, especially the old footbridge.

I'm talking purely in terms of aesthetics rather than usability, location, services etc...

Glasgow Central is my favourite its a fine concourse and the exterior is attractive also the number of trains arriving departing make a good place to wait for a train.

I quite like Ormskirk. It could do with those pesky buffers being removed and the 3rd rail being extended to Preston, but that's another story!

Apart from the dubious design of the staircase, Woodmansterne is quite nice, and has an odd but pleasant "out-of-town Tube station" feel about it.

Somehow, Shoreditch High Street's ticket office and concourse are quite appealing to me... interior only!
