hello everyone
i am new to the forum just putting a thread on the board about railway mpd s
just sharing some great memories off the sheds when diesels ruled supreme in the early 80 s
my favourite for visting was tinsley even though it was very hard to get round my other top two were eastfield and old oak common

Diesels.........:-x I was lucky enough to 'bunk' Old Oak, Willesden, Camden and Cricklewood most Sundays in the early sixties and while there were a few 'diesels' about, it was always steam for me. But 10001, 10002, 10201, 10202, 10203 and 'Peaks' with names were quite interesting and to another generation will be my steam :roll: Great days

A Sunday morning trip to Bescot and Saltley with my mates (courtesy of my father who was behind the wheel) always yielded results in 1980’s without the need trespass as both depots could be viewed from a public right of way. Bristol Bath Road was another favorite and when I went back to Bristol years later its disappearance came as a real shock.

As my father had a senior position at BR I didn’t dare attempt any shed bunks but I remember going on two or three official tours round Toton with its 58’s, 20’s and 47’s and later on the 45’s laid up for scrap. I can also remember an official trip round Stratford as a school boy which was quite an adventure given that I’d travelled down from Derby alone that morning!

Speaking of Tinsley I can remember attending a depot open day there. And on a later date Worksop and Shirebrook joint depot open days. Coalville was another favorite open day with the shuttle service from Derby which I think went via Sheet Stores and Stenson Junctions. Always a good line up of celebrity locos from what I remember.

As a lapsed enthusiast of many years (girls, uni, career and family commitments) how much has gone forever has come as a real shock. Back in the 1980’s the Platform 5 spotters books showed locos allocated to dozens of different depots. Even the smaller depots like Etches Park and Leicester still had plenty of shunters allocated to them. Even places like Wellingborough often still had locos stabled there.

Only ever been to two open days - one at Crewe and one at Tinsley. Just too late to catch Cockshute (cue laughter over name)

Thornaby - the foreman often let you go round provided you were sensible, and there were always loads of locos there at weekends. (Things started going rapidly downhill once class 60s started dominating Teesside).

So you must have witnessed the sad demise of the Great Central. I used to travel from Harrow to Marylebone most Saturdays in 1965/66 on the 11.15 from Nottingham to get 20 minutes behind steam. I then used my school pass to get back home to Wembley.
What an assortment! Britannia's, Royal Scots, Black 5's, Standard Class 5's and anything that Annesley/Banbury could muster in the final days.
How shortsighted was the closure of the Great Central...:-x
