Favourite place to sit

Do you have a favourite place to sit when traveling on a bus/coach? Do you tend to sit in the same part of the vehicle on every journey or do you vary it each journey?

As a rule my two favourite two places to sit are the very front or very rear but on individual journeys I choose where to sit based on the journey that I'm making(eg is it a scenic journey where a front seat will give me a good view), the layout of the vehicle that I'm on(eg is the emergency exit at the very rear, giving more legroom) and what other passengers are doing- for example on a recent NX journey I planned to sit at the front of the coach but after the other passengers squashed up there, I opted to move to the back so I could have more room to spread out and listen to my music.

What sort of things help you to decide where to sit when traveling on a bus/coach?

Like you, I prefer the front (decker) and the rear (single deck), but I also factor in the vehicle layout, journey type (commuting or scenic) and other passengers. I also try to factor in legroom, as I'm over 6ft tall and thin as a rail...

My favourite place to sit is anywhere that there is a space that doesn't involve sitting near to someone smelly.

My choice on heritage rear platform double deck buses is at the front of course, but if I don't particularly want to see the view then the rear seats are quite comfortable, especiallt on RTs and RMs.
On single deck service buses with low floors, the best seats for view are the first on the high floor making sure that the wheel-arch doesn't take away all the footroom.

I like the front seats on the top deck, or on a single decker, just behind the seats reserved for less mobile, on a coach second row

Best seats in something heritage and something rateable (Like a VR or Oly) are at the back around the engine, although upstairs can be nice too. On an RE, towards the back end. On something modern like our local Wright Eclipses, I usually tend to go towards the back too.

On most buses I sit at the very back on the right hand side. I think it started as the Citaros have a single seat there, so guaranteed not to share, and many buses have a bay of four or an emergency exit there for more legroom. If it is a double decker of course I will try to go for the front row!

Most bus and coach seats seem to be designed for people who are no bigger than average height. It's impossible for me to fit into most bus seats, I just can't get my legs in because the back of the seat in front is in the way. So usually I'll sit at the front on the fold down seats where pushchairs go. There's sometimes enough legroom at the back where the emergency door is.
If those seats are all taken, I'll stand if it's a short journey, or sit at an angle so I'm taking up two seats.
Then there are the seats that have a "headrest" that's angled forwards at (my) shoulder height, making them even more uncomfortable.

On the Tridents I tend to try to nab the seat thats directly behind the stairwell up top. On the E400's with the skinny leather seats, I aim for either the one near the driver or for one which doesnt have a window sill banging into my shoulder.

On the trains, I try and nab a quad seat if I can, as they tend to be the only options for me as the flip down seats are (rightfully) taken by bike, push and wheelchairs.

i've grown up assuming that most modern bus designers grew up near a pit in Wales somewhere, its the only logical explanation as to the piddlepoor legroom for the likes of me and my 6'3 kin.

I try and sit one row from the very back on the right hand side. For some reason this is the seat that has the best leg room and at 188cm I love leg room

On the occasions I catch the Derby skylink, and a Citaro turns up,close to the emergency exit (fire escape)

On those buses with a single seat at the front, I've rather taken to sitting there as on a busy service where the vehicle is likely to fill up, there is no chance of having to sit next to another passenger whereas if you are sat at anywhere else, it is inevitable.

The only drawback to those seats I've found has been that on a few journeys I've had passengers standing next to me, despite there being seats available.

I used to be very keen on the back seats when I went on a long distance journey(eg with National Express) but a good number of the journeys I made were on departures where the vehicle was one of the operator's own tour coaches with 5 rear seats and the toilet in the middle as opposed to the standard National Express configuration of the toilet at the rear.

I severely dislike the rear seats on the newer National Express vehicles- particularly on the plaxton elites. I recently did a return journey between London and Bluewater on one where I sat right at the front on the outward journey and got a good view and plenty of legroom whereas on the return journey I sat right at the rear where I got a restricted view, hardly any legroom and had to put up with the smell coming from the toilet.

On buses it's usually seats with a bit of extra legroom either the priority seats or by the emergency exits.

On coaches it's at the front left two pairs of seats...

Obviously being a bit on the lanky and large side drops my list of useful seats

On singles, it's usually the first of the higher ones towards the back, while on doubles it's usually the seat behind the stairwell.

When I used to get a coach to school, it was usually the seat behind the emergency exit and toilet in the middle, while the DDs that I caught while at University I usually sat at the back of the bottom.
