What are your favourite cities
For any reason you like.

BUT not the one you live in

Mine is London, just can't beat it, love the transport system, tube, trains every 5 minutes

Berlin, public transport system is second to none, very good night services, most underground lines have a replacement bus service between 1 & 4 am. Very good cycle provision. Loads of history. (some) bars open 24 hours a day. Excellent shopping, loads of parks, lakes etc. Good selection of swimming pools, indoor and outdoor in the summer. Very easy for non-german (i.e. english) speaking visitors.

Only downside is that both airports are cr@p.

If I assume that I live in Glasgow (and therefore can't say it...)

Edinburgh: just a wonderful city. Everything about it is simply fantastic.
York: A relatively small city, but I just love the atmosphere.
Brussels: May be a controversial decision given what parliament sits there, but politics aside, the city itself is just beautiful.

I'm sure Amsterdam would have been on my list if I hadn't gone with my school. The overprotective teachers struck the fear of God into us. "Don't eat food in case it's drugged", "you're going to get raped"... all that nonsense. When you're 14, that makes the whole thing rather scary. (Of course, nothing happened, and it was the teachers who had egg on their face after managing to take us on a tour of the red light district...)

Exeter (go to uni there). Everything's within walking distance, there are lots of good pubs and bars there, has a lower crime rate than most cities in the UK, and quite a few interesting shops. Not to mention that the Barnstaple branch line provides an interesting diversion.

Ummm, I'd have to say I really love Manchester. I've been a few times and it's just a brilliant city.

Brilliant buildings, awesome shops (as i've highlighted once before, i love shopping too much for a guy!)

I went to berlin in May and it was great. Berlin Hbf is amazing! The S-Bahn trains sound hellfire :roll:

Righty:
1 - Edinburgh or 'Dun Edin' as it is never known. Fantastic wee city, see something new every time. Architecture is second to none, the public transport is nationalised (aka Lothian Buses) the festival is the biggest and best in the world. Plus, it is soon to have a decent tram system.

2 - Bristol. Interesting city, as I've only seen the docks and the area immediately around Temple Meads Station. However, what I saw was beautiful. I shall return!

3 - London. The City that never sleeps, and I ****ing love it! It's a massively diverse population crammed into a fairly small area. I like the 'collection of villages' definition very much - it's true!

4 - Liverpool. Friendly, funny people. The City centre is one of the best in the country and the transport system is pretty awesome too. Plus it is the birth places of the 'YellowDuckMarine'

I can't choose just one and I can;t put them in any particular order, because they are all very different places that I love for different reasons:

Dublin: (The craic and the Guinness)
Amsterdam: (The food and the culture)
Paris: (The monuments and the atmosphere)
San Francisco (the bay and the cable cars)
London (The theatres and the museums)
Edinburgh (The architecture and the castle)
Lisbon (The trams and the sunshine)
Portsmouth (Spice Island and the Dockyard)
Newcastle (for the Quayside and the people)
Auckland (The harbour and the rugby.cricket!)

Totally agree with Inverness. Best place Ive ever been to.

But Bath is such a dump these days!

I meant Bath for the Crescent thing and historic city centre, oh and the 2nd handbookshop that sells all sorts of railway books from the 1970s onwards, at about 50p each

I quite like Manchester during the day; whenever I'm landed in the city centre late on a Friday or Saturday night though, all I want to do is get the hell out! Much prefer frequenting the rock bars around Oxford Road area on an evening.

I really like Sheffield, and York is an excellent historic city. Carlisle is a personal favourite of mine, but principally for the railway interest rather than the actual town. I really love Newcastle as well. Shame I can't include the city I currently live in, so I'll just say that it's great moving to a new home town from somewhere else you've lived all your life, you can get a whole new perspective on the world.

St David's. Never been there, but I like the idea of a city with a population of 1,800. With all the rest, the best view is the one you get leaning out of a MkIII, looking backwards.

Brechin. Although only a historic cathedral city, i love how the local football teams stadium has a hedge running along one side of it

have to agree inverness is a lovely place, a nice stroll along the ness or the caladonian canal cant be beaten, the people are nice, the food is good. also i love edinburgh a very divese place with lots to see and do.

In Bath, out towards the catherdal and city centre from the station. I'll see if I can find a name/address. its not speciality, but there is a good selectrion upstairs. I've got 12 old BR national timetables from there for about £8.

Derby - Where I go to uni, and I live not far away. Always somthing going off. Everythings close to gether and when it comes to shopping almost under one roof (Great when its raining!)

Nottingham - Again I live not far away. Sure its had it's troubled past and its bad reputation. But I realy think its improved and is still improving. There's plenty to do in Notts, and you can get more or less anything you want from Nottingham.

Newquay - The seaside, fish and chips and girls!

Peuto Banus - Girls, hot weather, the many many eateries (If anybody goes, I recomend 'Jacks' an American resturant on the harbour front, and then 5 minuites down the road, just outside Peuto Banus is 'Da Bruno' an Italian resturant. There's a few of them dotted around the Marbella/Costa Del Sol area. Brilliant food!) and of course the harbour!

Orlando, FL - Theme park after theme park. And Downtown Disney (Yes brilliant for a day or night out. I havn't seen Mickey Mouse knocking back a few at a bar, and then staggering out at the end of the night yet. But I'd like to, it'd be rather amusing!)

And then two cities I don't like...

Birmingham - I just don't like the city. I also find it's too busy and confusing and trying to be like London

London - Too big, busy and bustley for me. All I realy like about London is Heathrow and Gatwick airports, and of course its got more busy mainline terminal stations than you can shake a stick at. And I like the 02 too!

London- The city that never sleeps, so much to do in terms of entertainment. Great transport system as you can get from one place to another so easily. This is good especially for the tourists.

Nottingham - Went there last March and ever since I've liked it, it looks so industrialised and like everything you want could be in this one city.

Have to say.

Edinburgh: A fantastic place and brillant history.
Wells (Was the closest city i lived near when in i lived in Somerset)
Bristol: for RR, and Clifton Suspension bridge and off course for Bristol Temple Meads
York: Fantastic city and very nice

I live in nottingham, and I know I said you can't say your own citym but I think its great, excellent transport good shops always re-devoloping The council do a great job

I live in/near Manchester and I wouldn't nominate anyway as I think it's nowhere as good as it thinks it is or pretends to be!!! (Basically parts are superficially ok but over all it's a 5h1thole in my opinion!)

Glasgow - I can nominate and therefore will simply because I love the place.
Edinburgh - Yes and for the same reasons as Me123 above, but prefer Glasgow.
York - yes and again in agreement with the Me123.
Winchester - gorgeous place - absolutely love it.

I live in Birmingham and am just curious about that last statement. I've heard many negative things said about this city, but what gives you the impression that it's trying to be like London?! :-?

Well, lots to choose from, although I've been to so few, so my 3 favorite would have to be:

1. Adelaide - Its like a big country town, its not crowded, the weather is usually always nice, easy to get around and generally a very safe place to walk round at night.

2. London - Massive place, so much to see and do, loads of history, full of global icons, the great architecture, the museums, shops and great nightlife. No wonder I so much want to come back! lol.

3. Sydney - I love the harbour, the ferry services, I like all the great architecture that it is, the opera house and the bridge are all fantastic. Its a really nice place to walk round, loads of places to shop, the transport is great and the weather is normally very good too.
