Favorite loco names?

Inspired by the 'favorite loco' thread, what about loco names? Some, like 'Glasgow Chamber of Commerce', are just naff. I thought the 87s carried some impressive names:

Wolf of Badenoch
Earl Marischal
Coeur de Lion
Howard of Effingham
Knight of the Thistle
Hal o' the Wynd
Thane of Fife

The Pendelinos are not quite so stiringly named - I think the only ex-87 names they carry are the 'Citys'. But 'Virgin Soldiers' has a certain cheeky charm.

'Evening Star' was an apt name for a superb locomotive, but of my favorite type (the Coronation pacifics) the one with the best name (Sir William A. Stanier FRS) was scrapped.

Perhaps my favorite diesel is the 'Western' diesel hydraulic, the first one of which I think carried the best name: 'Western Enterprise'. It looked pretty good in its unique 'desert sand' livery, too.

Don't 'do' names, really. Like 'The Black Horse' for obvious reasons (although I do like the name as well!). Other than that, 'Edward Paxman' on 43170 was nice.

There is the old story, of course, that the GWR named its locos after the homes of its customers.
Hence, "Castle", "Hall", "Manor", "Grange", "County", etc, etc

Had to be the 50s for me. I remember that 'namers' were a bit special back then, as most engines weren't named. The fuss was unbelievable when 50007 was renamed and reliveried, and spoiled both the run of 50 warship names, and all of them being in large logo blue! Such consistency these days is hard to imagine!

I was always impressed by the name of one of Gresley's V2s : "The Snapper The East Yorkshire Regiment The Duke of York's Own"

Names that are associated with railway people and places eg - 'Driver John Elliott' & 'Spirit of Chester'...etc

Names on units just don't mean as much as names on locos.

oh I have one, it was on a deltic D9006 I cant remember the TOPS number but the name is Fife and Forfar Yeomonry, I dont know why I like it I just do

Pinza.....I always think needles and Pinza...I miss that loco .She hauled me up to York in 1979.R.I.P:cry:
