Its at Bo'ness. As 90019 says its a mixed set made up of the driving cars from 303032 (SPTE Orange/Black livery) and the motor coach from 303023 (Carmine/Cream livery).

Bloody hell. I nearly went to Bo'ness yesterday as well for the gala, but decided to save money instead and stay local... ish.

Um, no acceleration? Im sorry bud but you need to open your eyes! I suggest you take a look at some of Hyperen's videos on youtube of a 323 pulling away.

I dont need to they run my local, hypern does alot in BHM IIRC 10mph speed limit so it looks like it shifts fast but. nah as I said im just used to them so I cant stand them

All the vids I've seen make them look like very quick starters. They also shift like nobody's business in BVE. That said, I'm having a debate in the EMU thread about the speed of 314s, they feel faster than a lot of Glasgow's electrics to me!

Best AC unit - "Clactons" Class 309, quick & comfortable with proper buffets.

Best DC unit - 4-REP. Ride quality of loco hauled stock and formed 4-Rep 4-Rep 4-TC offered more hp than a Deltic.

Best modern unit - 4-WES "Plastic Pigs", again loco hauled ambience plus more than enough power on tap.

Worst unit - any PEP derivative, shoddy, uncomfortable, poverty-specced and no view out of the windows. In addition, no toilet meant that the ones used on late-night services from the London Terminii always smelled of ........ well you can guess!

Not being funny but can you back that up? I have no doubt that most classes these days have greater top speed but ive been on some 314s who accelerate as if theyre on tarmac.

And what are you talking about ONIX package? 314s have GEC or brush components...

Seriously, ride on one first (and i mean one where its driven properly, not like a sissy) and you might change your mind...

The ONIX package has subsequently been purchased by Bombardier it's been that good. Ride on a 334, 460, 390 etc and it puts all others to shame. RAIL published a 0-60 guide for modern traction last year sometime if you're interested. Hence, as 334s have almost twice the available power and only 22 extra tonnes in weight than the 314s, with ONIX the acceleration is far superior.

And thanks for the tip, but I lived in Thornliebank for a year of my life, commuting into the city from Whitecraigs on a 314 twice a day - I've had more than enough journeys with them!

This is the EMU thread.

Worst unit - any PEP derivative

I love them - the sound made by any 313, 314, 315, 507 or 508 cannot be beaten! :D

Most PEP derived units have been refurbished at least once since they were new.

uncomfortable

They were only designed to be used for short journeys. You've got to love the bouncing and rocking on jointed track.

poverty-specced

Comparing them with other things around when new, I would disagree. Surely you wouldn't be expecting PIDs ;)

and no view out of the windows

I always get a view :D

In addition, no toilet meant that the ones used on late-night services from the London Terminii always smelled of ........ well you can guess!

Yet again, they weren't designed for long distances, and I'm sure most of the stations in and around London have toilets. Not the train's fault if the occupants have had a bit too much to drink.

Best EMU? Easy.

Modern DC unit: 442's by light years

Slammers: Tough choice :? It's got to be a draw between the CIG(G), HAPs & the REPs & TC stock.

I have to say the Greyhounds being ex-FR & the REPs, TCs & HAPs for just plain comfort in the passenger accommodation, also nice to drive.

Best BR EMU: definitely a 442. Compared to a 444/450 it has more comfortable seats, air conditioning that doesn't freeze you to death and a nice "snug" area next to the buffet, which the 444 doesn't have.

Best post-privatisation EMU: 377. Unlike the 444/450s it has nicer air con and I prefer the interior decor

I believe you now. Perhaps the perception is just greater because the 314s you can 'feel' it more, with it not having decent suspension etc. Actually I think that IS it, because on a 170 I sometimes have to look out the window to remind myself I am actually moving :D Also I think the AC hum on 314s probably generates a psychological thought process of 'wow this unit is working hard so it must be going fast!' no hard feelings :)

Where could I find that 0-60 guide?

And thankfully, one has survived into preservation (as a mixed set).

Sadly, it doesn't actually go anywhere, though :( I really wish one or two had stayed on the mainline for heritage purposes; they were really popular trains.

As far as I am aware I was told by a trustworthy friend work is being scheduled to take place on the 303 at Bo'ness very soon.

Best Regards

I like the 377/375. Mainly because of the looks tho I do enjoy the high back seating at the tables. Still need to do a decent run on AC on one tho!

When the 377s come back onto MK - Croydon runs, 90mph tween Berko and Leighton Buzzard and Bletchley - MK is very enjoyable. Even going from Croydon up, when the service departs Wembley it's the first time the driver can really open the taps - it's very noticeable and quite enjoyable!

Alot of people like quite them, I cant see whats so good about them but that may be because they replaced my faves and they run my local line. dont like the "gear" noise they make, it just seems to be that and no acceleration.
The only thing I liked about them went when LM took over, The RR Green livery :)

I really like them, I use them all the time when travelling into Manchester from Prestbury. They are fast (for a commuter train 90Mph), have good acceleration, good inside layout, good seats (although Northern does need to refurbish them as some are getting worn) and I think they look generally good aswell :)

I do like the CIGs, VEPs but i prefer the modern stock. My favs are.

Class 390 pendolino.
Class 323 ( i love the traction motor noise) They look best in LM livery.
Class 377

Also the refurbished 442. Like the interior, also being mk3 chassis they are nice to ride on :)

Easy, Siemens Velaro - great in every way, especially the noise when accelerating from the station, and the fact that you can sit AT THE FRONT!! :)

In the UK, has to be 395 and 390. Why? Because they are the fastest and the most interesting engineering-wise (I love a good tilt at 125mph)

They are also the most modern and actually look like real trains instead of coaches with an engine.

Well the old CIGs VEPs etc where like coaches with engines, but i can;t see that on modern emus.

How do you work that one out then? :???:

Any 400 series unit was formed of a DT, NDT, MC & DT, apart from the CEPs & BEPs where it was MC, NDT, NDT, MC or Class 442 which was DTF, TSO, MBLS, TSW, DTS.

So where's the loco link with the Cl. 400 slammers?
Yes you could run them in multiple with Class 33/1 & Cl.73 but that's about it.

The REPs were formed from former loco hauled stock IIRC.

For Quirkyness it has to the the BOB units prior to 2005.... A single car EMU hauling a motley collection of antique coaches - it even ran around the train at the terminus

800px-Mh_BOB_Interlaken.jpg

They have now modernised with new low floor rakes running push-pull with the Motor cars

My EMU experience in the UK is limited to 455, 313, 315, 333 and 321 - I've had brief trips on 450, 377 and 465

I do love the electrostars not too keen on the desiros...I always thinks the insides are too basic, even the express long distance versions...

Not basic, simple & practical! :D

I'm a huge fan of the Desiros - unlike the Electrostars, they feel to me that they've been engineered well, with forethought and attention to detail.

Desiro's are god damned awful things, they crucify the track as they're built like a tank, they're too heavy.

The only good thing about a Desiro is it's traction package.

The perfect 750v DC unit would have the body & bogies of a 442, the brakes of a 458 & traction package of a Desiro.

However as no-one has the gumption to build such a unit we're stuffed with the rubbish that we have today.

Has to be the 313s for me for 5 reasons:
1) They've stood the test of time and still run today.
2) They're the first ever dual voltage EMUs.
3) They can deal with passenger numbers adequately and are well suited to their routes.
4) Built well - good acceleration, small body, spacious interior.
5) Even though they're treated badly, it's unlikely to see an unusual circumstance.
