Faversham to Bristol Parkway

Hoping for some advice from you knowledgable folk.

Colleague is travelling from Faversham to Bristol Parkway tomorrow (June 13) and needs to arrive for 11.40am at the latest (which is the exact arrival I've looked for) and leaving about 5pm onwards.

Best I've found is Faversham to Paddington return, then Paddington to Bristol Parkway return.

Former is FAV -> PAD, dep. 7.39am, arr. 9.31am (via London Bridge). Cost of £54.60

Latter is PAD -> BPW, dep. 10.15am, arr. 11.40am. Cost of £59.50

Total cost = £114.10

Anything much better available?

If your colleague doesn't mind changing a few extra times and arriving at 11:48, they could use the through Super Off-Peak Return routed '✠Any Permitted', which costs £71.20 without a Railcard. This would require changing at Charing Cross, Waterloo East, Waterloo and Salisbury. TrainSplit.com offers this itinerary by default when selecting 'value'.

If your colleague cannot spare the extra 8 minutes or would prefer a journey with fewer changes, they can still use the above Super Off-Peak Return, but they would need to excess the outbound portion to the Off-Peak Return, as the train required to arrive in Bristol at 11:40 is not valid with the Super Off-Peak Return (as you can't depart Paddington before 10:15 on this particualr Super Off-Peak). A one-direction excess in this case is half the difference between the two fares, thus it would be £12.15 in this case.

You can in theory excess the ticket onboard the train without penalty, however if the barriers at Paddington are in operation (as they mostly are), they will no doubt reject the ticket (correctly for once!). It would thus be advisable to obtain the excess before travelling in order to avoid missing the planned train.

Since this is a walkup ticket I would simply buy it at any convenient ticket office and obtain the excess there and then. Any competent ticket office clerk should be able to do this easily!

All of the above tickets are unrestricted on the Faversham-London part, by virtue of the Network Area Rule and the implementation thereof in the restriction codes.

An excess for a change of ticket type is for the whole difference in price of the tickets - not half the difference. There is therefore no point in buying the super off-peak ticket.
