Faversham - Ashford ticket question

Yes, that has to be valid.
The new flow is routed EBSFLET+HSNOTLON and Gillingham is between Faversham and Ebbsfleet, there's no other way you could go!
Under the rules of impartial retailing, Gillingham station are obliged to sell such a ticket. I can't guarantee they will abide by the rules, but they should sell it, and it's perfectly valid to simply start/finish short. Note however that if they refused to sell it (which they are not allowed to do) and the matter was then referred to SET customer relations, this may alert SET of the anomaly and the fare may then be increased. Therefore I would advise purchasing on-line if possible.

If the ticket office refuses to sell the ticket, try the self service machine.
If that won't let you buy the ticket, try and buy a permit to travel.
If the machine's been turned off as the ticket office is open, then you can join the train without a ticket as you haven't had the opportunity to buy a ticket

I am planning to travel early next month so I will order on the internet from my usual supplier (Southern Railway - no collection charges) and pick it up from the machine a day or two in advance.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any self-service machines in the country that will sell a ticket from Faversham, other than the machines at Faversham. I wish they would let passengers change the origin, but I doubt this has been done, or ever will be. But it should!

I don't think it would. Fraud would be one problem, as well as extra confusion for passengers!
Ticket machines in other parts fo the world sell tickets between any two stations and passengers never seem confused!!! Actually just happy they don't have to queue at the ticket office. Also here Southwest Trains have machines that don't even have all destinations on which is surely even more confusing for passengers. I notice even "simple pricing" promoters Grand Central have got in on the stupid fares with their London to York fare being cheaper than their London to Doncaster one despite it being further due it being more competitive with East Coast. Didn't take them long! The conversion to Simpler Fares has gone sooooo well!!
You should try buying a ticket from the machines at Ashford International on a sunday morning before the ticket office opens!
The ticketing from this station is particularly complicated because of Hs1 and the new line has obviously attracted lots of new to rail passengers who are not at all familiar with railticketing,
Any passenger who knows how to use the machine is likely to be surrounded by crowds of people asking for help, I think my record is 6 groups of people before I had to leave for my train.
Thanks for all your advice, I picked up my ticket from the machine and made my journey yesterday as planned.
The only problem that I had was at Ebbsfleet where gates between the two parts of the station had to be manually released as my ticket, although routed via Ebbsfleet, would not open them.

Yeah the ticket gates at Ebbsfleet and St. Pancras really aren't too clever. Which trains did you catch on the Faversham line bit, I may have been on one of them
