See now I had this and something I read on here made me think

If you wanted to surrender this season ticket and get a refund, as per the rules, would you be entitled to anything?

According to NRCOC if you *lose* a season ticket you can't then get it refunded, so how do they tell the difference between a replaced - lost - season ticket, and the replaced damaged ticket?

Is it from the value? Or some database somewhere?

Well, the original fare paid will presumably be stored in Southern's computer if they were to query my photocard number, so I would hope they would be able to locate it if I wished to surrender it.

Theoretically, an Encode Exchange should be issued on stock with an overprint of "REPLACEMENT" at the bottom, whereas a Duplicate is issued on stock with an overprint of "DUPLICATE".

It should also be recorded in the TOC's Season Ticket Database. On FasTIS for example, a Duplicate shows up with a (D) in brackets and a price of £10.00, whereas Encode Exchanges show up with an (E) in brackets and a price of £0.00.

Yes, it does say
S E A S O N
REPLACEMENT

in the bottom right hand corner of the ticket.

Not sure about the packaging simile. If I buy a product from a shop how do they know if I am buying it for the product or the packaging*? If the packaging is faulty the product is faulty. If your ticket doesn't work then you might not get the travel you actually paid for.

*I'm thinking of the box of Ferraro Roche I bought so my son could make an aquarium as feature on CBeebies' Mr Maker

Purchasing a season ticket is purchasing the right to travel. The ticket is evidence of that right, but is not what you have purchased.
