Correct procedure is to call Barclays automated system (Streamline) and do a shop-style verification.
The system askes for company number, card number and details and amount to authorise. Incredibly useful.
In a lot of cases it told me to withold card and for on train staff, £50 reward for withdrawn cards. Often it would flag up no funds, card not in use or several other things.

Its the green lloyds tsb cards that cause the most problems with Scotrails thyron machines and occasionally BOS and RBS cards. I think they are looking to get them online so all cards will be accepted (not electron,solo or diners cards). Also that would mean no onboard limit for transactions. Ideal for the commission hungry Guards
Yeah i see Solo and Electron getting used far less now . I couldnt use it at Ticket Offices or Onboard.

AFAIK Solo cards are being rebranded Maestro and Visa Electron are being rebranded as Visa Debit. At least that was what I was told. It makes it more difficult to determine if the card will work with the thyron if you can't tell if it's the old solo or electron. This should also help to explain why some visa debit cards (such as Lloyds) get rejected despite having Visa Debit on them.
Online capability would be nice but FGW haven't said to us guards that this will be implemented in the future. Having spoken to some of the revenue managers it doesn't sound as though this will be likely. Not in the near future at least. It would be good if they did though. Would certainly make the job easier and avoid the embarassing situation of having to tell the passenger that their card has been declined when it probably wouldn't be if online connectivity were possible.
