Have a couple of mates who are asking why the disruption was so long for yesterday's fatality. It does seem rather excessive for a regular suicide. There are rumours locally that there was a stabbing too which would involve more extensive forensics. As ever thoughts with the driver and all involved.

Disruption always lasts for hours after the event especially during the peak in suburban areas...nothing out of the normal there.

The whole incident was managed in a timely fashion. Incident declared a 0846, up and down slow opened 0858 for non stop, all lines opened and "normal" working 1003.

The highlighted bit is probably shows how little you know!

Those times don't sound excessive. Was there unrelated disruption in the evening too?

I'm not aware of any other disruption in the evening, however the morning incident did seem to cause crew to be out of place for the whole day and also some stock ended up in the wrong place for start of proceedings this morning.

No, not that I am aware of but an incident such as this can have an almost domino like effect on the service displacing both trains and crew. Have to agree with 455driver on this one too, there isn't really such a thing as a 'regular suicide' the police will treat the area as a crime scene until they are satisfied no foul play took place. Even if that is the case every incident is different had has to be properly investigated and then the remains removed accordingly.

Just to clarify by regular suicide I mean as opposed to someone being pushed or chased onto the line by some creature with a knife.

How do you know that is the case though?
Just because somebody takes a run and jump in front of the train doesnt mean he wasnt being chased at the time!

You are making assumptions which the people on the ground simply cannot make.

1850 Waterloo to Reading was 10 minutes late at Clapham junction yesterday. Guard on train put it down to earlier Wimbledon fatality.

I wasn't disruppted at all by having to wait over an hour for a stopping train from Woking to Basingstoke finally geting one at 18:25, no not at all!

The helpful station staff could only tell me to watch the boads for information. Then when a train from Waterloo which was going to stop at Farnbrough, etc. did leave Waterloo as it wasn't schedued to stop at Woking it didn't. OK, it may well have been very busy, but then why not add a stop on one of the many trains going to Basingstoke so that it stopped at Farnborough so people could then get on that stopping train once a load of people have got off it at Farnborough.

It's not like Farnborough doesn't have fairly significant passenger numbers (about 3 million), OK this is about 1/2 the number (including interchanges) of Basingstoke, but there were several trains to Basingstoke in that time.

The disruption impacted a lot of services on Tuesday too - stock was still somehow unable to get back into place, so there was odd workings like a single 455 covering a Windsor diagram all day.

a spokesman for the British Transport Police said:
The incident is not being treated as suspicious

Why did this fatality lead to such stock and crew displacement? Was it the timing straight at the end of morning peak that was the issue? In the morning they said it would be resolved by 3pm. There have been other facilities on the south west mainline towards London recently and they didn't seem to cause the same amount of disruption. However they occurred later in the day which might be why.

I'm not blaming anyone just wondering how they were not able to recover sooner, especially as they thought they would be able to by 3pm. This isn't an exact science. I imagine though they will look at this and see what they could do in the future or if nothing, look to revise their recovering predictions so they are lengthier to start with.

I arrived at Waterloo at about 16:45 looking for something to Ewell West, nothing on the board. Announcements made about Exeter and Salisbury services being turned around at Basingstoke.
Eventually got a 17:?? Effingham service which said it was 10 late. Packed to the gunnels!
All this is well after the incident so I do hope both SWT and NR have a look at what they could do better another time.

Unfortunately i would have to agree that this is becoming a regular problem now.

I work for DHL supplying logistics to Virgin Trains (formerly done by Rail Gourmet) and we get emails virtually every week at the least recently about this, i have also now seen more notices from places like Samaritans going up because of this but unfortunately it seems like people know that there's no coming back from it and it's hard to try monitor everything and everyone.

Somebody being chased on to the tracks or being pushed wouldn't have been a suicide though, or an 'irregular' suicide? ;)

Yes but a fatality surely isn't classed as a suicide until the police say so?

First of all, my thoughts with the crew and the families of all parties involved.

At my depot we have probably 99% full crew working so when things go wrong, they just need to find us a train, though we normally work the same stock in and out so delays are kept minimal. How is it at other depots on the SWT network and if there isn't much full crew working does this cause a lot of the problems as well as working a variety of stock over different routes? For example you have a guard, but the driver is still elsewhere on a different service.

I know variety is the spice of life but perhaps they need to take the KISS approach. Keep It Simple Stupid.

Police usually classify it as suspicious, non suspicious or unexplained. I believe it's up to the coroner to legally class it as suicide, accident, murder or misadventure etc etc.

How common (if at all) is it for someone to be trained as a guard and as a driver (so can switch roles as needed - provided they've got enough driving hours left for a shift)?
