Why not? I use the route, my journey was delayed, I don't see what's so wrong with wanting to atleast know what unit was involved.

What knowledge of the incident and delay will you gain from knowing? If the answer, as I suspect, is nothing, then it's a frivolous question.

...and not a little distasteful.

Someone somewhere (in fact, several someones) had a very bad day. A little respect and understanding wouldn't go amiss.

With all due respect, nowhere did I insult the person involved or condem them. I simply wanted to know which unit was involved which is no way harmful to anyone.

I also don't think it's a good thing to make assumptions about my understanding of what drives people to these actions. I think you'll find my understanding is much more than you'd think. You don't know my background nor my past.

a bit of respect for the driver would not go a miss,
I know of drivers that have to given up their post because they can not face it again.

Another driver at my depot is now off because he knocked down two young girls late on Friday night. He's traumatised, as is the guy driving the train coming the other way who saw it all. The line wasn't reopened until 0600 on Saturday due to the amount of mess, with some reports suggesting that body parts ended up at the bottom of the embankment where the road and station entrance are.

That's two drivers and two families, not counting the people on what were two of the last services that night, the BTP, Nitwit Rail and other TOC employees. And all people want to know is a unit number. Why? Why do you want to know those details? As I said above you can get all the information you would ever want from a gen list. That's what those resources are there for.

There are two things that annoy me intensely about this forum, and this is the other one. It might not seem that way, but honestly I'm not judging you. You just happen to have been the person to have asked the question.

today I will mostly be at home decorating
Also the driver who hit the corsa at Waterloo xing Wokingham is off, I have a LOT of consideration for the driver(s) in these incidents, but he only asked for the unit number, maybe some people are a bit close to things to be subjective.
In case you are wondering yes I am a driver and no I have not been involved in a fatality with a train.

Then you are a very lucky man.

But to answer the question again, there are plenty of gen lists available that will sate his need for information. What I still don't understand is why he wants it.

Additionally, what I certainly did not do was to "rip his head off".

Just wondering if anyone knows what unit was involved in the fatality in the Hendon area recently.

It was a heavy train travelling at speed, that's all you need to know who gives a flying what unit it was, oh yes, the poor twain may be out of service so spotters can't travel on it, photo it or write down it's number in their book, shame. I take O.L. Leigh's slant on this one as I did on the other 5 over the last month

He's only being curious and asking what the number of the unit is! Hardly showing any disrespect for the parties involved is it?

Nowhere did I undermine the events, I asked for harmless information.

If you don't like the post, don't waste time and bandwith replying. Not every post requires your almighty, unquestionable opinions

Sorry, but as a passenger I do find the question a tad distasteful. What are you planning a little set of tally stickers to put on the side of the train? Sorry, not nice.

Without wishing to 'judge' or 'diagnose' the OP and without meaning anything against the condition whatsoever, it's the sort of question someone with a form of Aspergers might ask. They will not realise that it may cause offence, they do not wish to cause offence, and they cannot help asking that sort of question. It's not an uncommon question to be asked, although rather less common on a forum like this. But if on a 'spotters' site you can guarantee loads of people would want to know what unit was involved and they would not mean any disrespect or harm to anyone. Also that knowledge doesn't harm anyone either.

Personally I would not ask such a question as I do not care, have no wish to know, and would realise it would cause offence. But that doesn't mean everyone should adhere to that, and anyone who does not adhere to that is not necessarily trying to cause offence.

Perhaps the people who are doing the judging could consider this when making their judgements.

No-one is judging the OP or anyone else, and certainly not making any suggestions that the OP has Aspergers Syndrome, or indeed anything else that might excuse his initial question.

However, no matter how innocent the enquiry might have been it was neither particularly sensitive nor in the best taste. A railway fatality is traumatic and tragic no matter what it's cause. It should not be forgotten that this forum is a public place and that it is not beyond the realms of possibility that those people directly affected might be looking for more information online. Consequently it is good manners to treat all such matters with dignity and respect.

There are enough people on here who are railway staff or directly connected to the industry in some other way. If someone really is in such dire need to identify the train involved then an approach can easily be made by PM to someone who might know or be in a position to find out.
