Fatal Tram Accident in Manchester.

It would appear that a pedestrian fell under a tram in Manchester, with fatal resluts.

Will be interesting to see the outcome of this considering since the very start trams have been designed to attempt to prevent incidents like this being fatal. Most pedestrian fatalities have been knock downs where it's been the fall that has killed them (could be the case here for all we know at the moment).

It looks like the pedestrian fell over in front of the tram and because he was on the ground rather than hit while standing he got stuck under the wheelguards (no contact with the actual wheels) rather than being pushed out of the way. The tram was only doing 9mph and was braking.

Obviously a very tragic accident involving loss of life.

However, I do note how difficult tram driving is in Manchester City Centre. Mulitiple times I have witnessed people carelessly wandering on the tracks, with no regard for the trams. This tends to occur the most in the Piccadilly Gardens and Market Street area, where pedestrians are in close proximity to the metrolink infrastructure.

I am not implying that this was the cause of the accident, but rather commenting on the observations I have made.

All accidents such as this are regrettable, and in a perfect world should not happen.
I have been at Piccadilly and seen the throng of pedestrians milling about around the trams.
People think trams can stop on a tanner, but this is not the case.
All things railway/trams are big and heavy and if they touch you the worst can happen.
My thoughts go to the family of the injured person and to the driver of the tram.

Ive been on countless trams around market street where people have walked out in front, the horn screams, the Emergency Brakes apply, and the pedestrians oblivious to whats happened, luckily ive never been on a tram Thats actually hit a person, Condolences to the family...
