Fatal level crossing incident, Gloucestershire

Line between Swindon and Gloucester shut after train (1336 London Paddington to Cheltenham) hits car on level crossing (St Mary's crossing near Frampton Mansell, perhaps, judging by location of halted trains on RealtimeTrains).

Now believed to be fatal according to British Transport Police.

Anyone know anything more?

At 3.10pm today we were called to a level crossing close to Frampton Mansell, Gloucestershire, following reports that a car had been struck by a train.

Isn't it more likely to be Frampton User Worked Crossing? St Mary's Crossing is manned.

Edit: Just picked up there has already been a fatal accident there as recently as May 2014.

Agreed, less likely to be St Mary's. I see now there is a farm crossing nearby where a fatal collision occurred in May 2014.

[ Reports concern inquest and RAIB report into death of 37-year-old motorcyclist who died in May 2014 - he was among a group of riders who did not use a telephone provided there to find out if it was safe to cross. The riders did not know a curve in the railway meant they could not rely on seeing approaching trains. The train’s warning horn sounded on the approach but the riders did not hear it as they were wearing full-face crash helmets and their engines were noisy, the report said. The report recommended signs are improved on the crossing to clarify what vehicles could and could not cross at the junction. Network Rail has since fitted signs which say “Level crossing closed to motorised vehicles except for farm traffic”. ]

You've already posted details of what is known are already in your link. As this is a fatality, I duly respect that we shouldn't go looking for more. Condolences to family of man and thoughts with driver of train and all others involved.

Some up morning peak services have run via and called at Bristol Parkway, including 2M02 0517 Gloucester to Southampton via Melksham!

From snippets from local media published on line, the passengers were detrained by the Fire Brigade using ladders and taken in small groups to the Crown Inn in the village to wait relatives/friends to collect or onward road transport. (Number involved not known). All evacuated after 2 hours. Suspect this is the train:-
3Z38 04+30 Swindon to Old Oak Common this morning but police still require the line closure due to investigation work.

I saw some video footage today, by a local paper, taken at the crossing. Couldn't see any telephones but Police were on hands and knees undertaking a fingertip search which seems a bit unusual to me.

But, previous posters are correct, let's wait for the official report.

According to the BBC this evening the man who died was the farmer who was the only person who had the key to the crossing gates and the authorisation to use it.

Witnesses state he has used the crossing for 30 years.

Makes me think that this was not a misuse, very sad.

I would be very surprised if that was true, as the crossing is on a "Other Route with Public Access", so is a legal Right of Way for all types of vehicles. I can see no Closure Order or Traffic Regulation Order closing or restricting it anywhere.
And the photos seem to show it is used fairly regularly.

Graham, the closure of the crossing to vehicles is referenced in the RAIB report into the previous fatal accident at the crossing. The ORPA does not include the area within the railway boundary, see page 16 (para 34-37) and pages 24-27 & 30-31.

Thank you and very interesting. As said I can find no TRO for the crossing, but can't access the List of Streets off-line, so it may have been annotated there.

Clearly my previous post saying I could not see any telephones was wrong. The BBC article clearly shows telephones in place. No doubt they are recorded, that's standard procedure, so the RAIB will have recovered the conversations. Let's await the official report.
