Farnborough station- am I missing something

Is there a prize offered for the first person out of the station building at Farnborough during the evening peak? It's just that given the stampede for the barriers I'm assuming there's got to be something in it. Some of the commuters start crowding the train doors from Woking and appear to be limbering up ready to run.

But seriously, is it worth all that stress just for a ten second advantage? Plenty of taxis to go round, no great traffic problems at the car park exit.

I find Reading particularly nasty ATM when I need to walk up plt 7 from plt 3 on a Fri evening with half the platform taken up by scaffolding - it's almost a wonder no ones ended up on the track yet the way people barge past each other going in the opposite direction. :-x

You should see Cambridge in the rush-hour when two 12 coach trains arrive one after the other, Over 1000 people trying to get through four gates, hence people running to the gates.

It's a pretty bad situation at Reading as it is, adding on top those commuters & the narrow platform and im supprised nothings happend yet too. Mind you, NR Pulled a blinder at the weekend on changing platforms. By closing the main through platform (up fast/down fast), you then had to walk out of the new side enterance (from platforms 1, 2&3), down a new temporary path created to the enterance / exit near the Great Western Club, and back up to the main station - good luck if you've got a tight connection then!

Tight connections have been a bit of a risk over the last year, I don't think the powers that be have even increased the minimum connection time from the usual 7 min. which is pushing it somewhat if you want to go from plt 1/2 over to what to plt 11.

I used to frequent Farnborough station on an evening in the 1980s when my Mum used to take me on to the platform to wave at the driver and meet my Dad off the train back from work.

It was exactly the same then. The doors would be open as the train was half way down the platform and people would be leaping out well before the train had stopped and sprinting towards the exit. The only difference was the ticket checkers booths were manned by real people (with those wonderful BR Captain Scarlet hats) rather than gates.
