Looking to take a day trip to St Albans tomorrow with my two children using a family and friends railcard. National Rail website comes up with two different off peak fares depending on train used - the total for all of us is either £12.05 or£12.30. In the cheaper case one child fare is limited to £2. However both trains are FCC.

Anyone explain why the difference?

The £12.30 fare is an Off Peak Day Return for 1 adult and two children, all with the Family & Friends (F&F) discount.

The £12.05 fare is an Off Peak Day Return for 1 adult and 1 child with the F&F discount, plus an accompanied child fare which is capped at £2. The latter is available thoughout most TOC networks in the Network Area, where the travelling adult has a valid ticket.

Why the cheaper option isn't available on the slow trains is a mystery - and an inaccuracy.
