Fares from Milan to Como & Pavia

I will be in Milan from 24/4-28/4 & am on a railtour on the Sat. On Sun/Mon I was planning on getting a train to either Pavia or Como depending on the weather and was wondering if there was a regional ticket rather that was better value. I will have Milan 'travel cards' for all the days as the hotel is doing a discounted €2.00 deal for them. Unfortunately I don't get my FIP until June.

I assume it will be cheaper to get a local train from Pte Venezia which is nearer my hotel.

The Trenord website shows day tickets for the Lombardy region.

If you are going to Como, I'd suggest using the route to Como Nord Lago (station on the lakefront), rather than to Como San Giovanni station on the main line into Switzerland, which is away from the tourist part of town

Como Lago trains depart from Milan Cadorna suburban station, which is half-a-dozen stops along the M1 metro line from Porta Venezia.

Local fares are pretty cheap in Italy (€4.80 each way Milano/Como), so it's a bit cheaper to buy return train tickets plus the €2.00 ATM pass. Unless you wanted to buy the €16.00 Io Viaggio ticket and spend a day track bashing around Northern Italy.

Will try that on the Mon. Have made uses of Seat 61's excellent advice and bagged a Eur29 fare using the DB loophole via Chur to Basel on Tues. Night in Mulhouse on Tues then Cite du Train & Auto museumd on Weds with a £20 Easyjet back to Gatwick that night.

Did that a few years back. Fares are very cheap, I think "first class" was a matter of 3eur single from Milan to Como. You might like to take the outbound trip to Como Lago, then walk along the lake front, through the old town (couple of good cafes and some stunning architecture), over to Como s.Giovanni station and return via there.

No real idea on how the ticketing works as I only made a simple return trip using two singles.

At Como s.Giovanni there's a little more railway interest with the pendolino trains going through to Switzerland. Chiasso is the next station up from here in Swtizerland with a large freight yard etc.

Anyway, enjoy your trip. Como is a nice place to get away from the chaos of Milan

I was in Como last October. The train fares are terrific value. (Didn't even bother to try and get cheapest ones).
Did a trip from Varenna to Tirano. Seven Euro for 85km each way on a very interesting route.

The fares in the area are very good value and I enjoyed my visit to Como Lago di Nord station. It's close to the funicular and the ferries to the other towns on the lake, like Bellagio.

There are a few trains continuing north that are well worth getting; Chiasso and Lugano are lovely places, but you will have to get some Swiss Francs if you want to go there. I would if you can!

Get a lot of Swiss Francs, it's an expensive country!

For Pavia, I changed from the metro at Rogoredo. Tickets were not expensive.
