Fareham-Gatwick/victoria route

Evening all, I was working fareham today where passengers where going to Gatwick, Victoria or somewhere on the line where the service stops but ever since they stopped the services to and from Victoria and Southampton and added another service from Portsmouth (now 2tph) they also stop at hilsea which the national rail app tell them to change at from fareham to Victoria or that line.

We highly advise for them to change at barnham due to the fact there’s more connections but people would rather stick to national rail app directions even know I had multiple people with wheelchairs , luggage and prams come through meaning they have to walk another 5/10 minutes over a road bridge to cross to the right platform and through a field.

not sure why the app directs the them to the most Awkward way possible especially if they are disabled or lugging prams/luggage as it’s more time crossing over like a day.

Surely the app should say barnham due to more connections and is on the same platform and more accessible via a subway ramp on the platforms meaning worse comes to and there’s a platform change it’s only 2 mins cross over time.

Not fareham to hilsea then change as it’s not really easy for accessibility especially come winter time as most of the field has a path until the last little bit then it’s grass and back onto the path which leads to the station and that gets muddy in the winter , so really if they wanna keep change at hilsea option extend the path all the way, also don’t recommend as limited shelter and is horrible when it rains.

The reason journey planners don't suggest changing at Barnham is because it's a slower journey.

That said, the forum's site does show changes at Barnham, Chichester or Southbourne, where this is cheaper than the fastest itineraries; these may not appear on a default search using the fastjp site, but are found behind the scenes.

Brighton train from fareham to barnham

Oh I'm so sorry. I misunderstood. It would be a different departing train if you changed at Hilsea compared to the journey changing at Barnham. Got it !

I noticed a similar quirk yesterday. Travelling from Horsham to Parkstone (Dorset), the national rail app showed all trains down to change at Ford and all trains up to change at Barnham. As both stations are on the same line, it seems to make little difference where you change and Barnham has a cafe.
I did briefly wonder what the logic was but got bored and gave up.

Exactly like barnham more shelter , cafe and ramp for subway where hilsea has limited shelter. , extra distance to change platforms if wheelchairs/mobility scooters , prams and luggage and no refreshments etc
