Wonder if anyone can help.

A neighbour is going from Sheffield to Hamilton West on Monday, and has asked me about return split tickets.

I've managed to work out a very reasonable price to Hamilton Central, but everytime I try Hamilton West I keep hitting a brick wall.

The problem is that advance tickets are no good as the departure from both stations is not known yet.

Likewise the return could be Tuesday or Thursday.

I should also add that the least number of changes would be better, hence why I have concentrated on the direct CrossCountry to Motherwell.

Anyone any idea?

Trainsplit only came up with a split at Edinburgh with walk-up tickets. The real savings are to be had with Advance tickets (unless, of course, you wish to travel at the really quiet times before the through Off Peak fare becomes valid)

In cheap mode, Advance fares did offer quite some savings, so it may be worth booking just the outward leg at this stage and booking the return leg nearer the time if the aim is to save money.

Without knowing what you have found, and what the comparable itineraries were that gave very different results for Hamilton West vs Hamilton Central, it's difficult to comment on that.

why not just buy a Hamilton Central to Hamilton West ticket to add on to your split?

Depending on where your ticket to Hamilton is from there's a high likelihood that it will be accepted to any Hamilton station - obviously excluding the Square station.

if the split is at or via Motherwell, which it likely will be, Hamilton West would likely be an over-ride on a Hamilton Central ticket. The easy solution seems to be just buy the Hamilton Central > West ticket, its one stop and all trains will call at Hamilton Central anyway.
