Hi all, I'm looking to travel Sheffield (or Chapeltown SY) to Stafford on Saturday 18/3/17. I need to be there by 9am and return after 8pm. There seems to be virtually no advance fares at all on this journey (apart from one departure at 0511).

Can anyone help me with the cheapest way of doing this journey please? I have no railcard or anything. Thanks.

I can get it down to £23.20 by splitting at Stockport and using advances. I used the TPE website.

Are you happy with using an anomaly between Sheffield and Stockport? It's one where you will have an itinerary to show to the conductor in the event of any problems. I've used this ticket several times without trouble. I'll send you a PM if you want it?

I'd be very interested in this given how often I travel between the two stations.

I'd be interested as well - I don't remember it being covered on the fares workshop I went to :)

I do this journey in reverse from time to time. More often than not I travel via Tamworth using the following:

Stafford to Lichfield Trent Valley £5.40 Off-peak Day Return
Lichfield Trent Valley to 'Burton on Trent' £6.10 Off-peak Day Return
Derbyshire Wayfarer (valid Burton to Sheffield) £12.40
TOTAL £23.90

Since the new National Rail Conditions of Travel came into force, the train doesn't even have to stop at Burton (condition 14.2).

However, the last direct service from Stafford to Tamworth (via Lichfield Trent Valley) is at 19:51, so it doesn't quite meet your criteria for returning after 20:00.

Considering a move to Memphis
Stafford to Lichfield Trent Valley £5.40 Off-peak Day Return
Lichfield Trant Valley to 'Burton on Trent' £6.10 Off-peak Day Return
Derbyshire Wayfarer (valid Burton to Sheffield) £12.40
TOTAL £23.90

Thats interesting. Lichfield to Burton is cheaper than Tamworth to Burton ...

It can be done by changing at Derby and Stoke on Trent at an even cheaper price by splitting at Blythe Bridge.

Sheffield to Blythe Bridge @ £11.60 Off Peak Day Return
Blythe Bridge to Stafford @ £9.30 Anytime Day Return
Total £20.90

This is with 0650 departure from Sheffield
Returning with a 2044 departure from Stafford.
Journey time approx 2 hr 10 each way.

Yes, please. Thank you. If it's complicated, a brief explanation would be nice too.
