This fare doesn't seem to come up on most online journey planners, but is there if you search through national rail enquiries' website.

Chris: there is no such thing as a child's evening return though according to the northern rail details of the offer, and the national rail enquiries site suggests 4 adult cheap evening returns at £3.70 each, totalling £14.80. This fits in with the advertised price of 'half the off-peak return' price. There are no railcard discounts.

Accoriding to east coast you can get an off-peak day return for virgin trains only which comes out at a cheaper £12.15 using your railcard, but obviously has less flexibility.

Bear in mind that the last Virgin Train back to Macclesfield is at 21:15, not exactly giving you a lot of time in Manchester.

No we are going to pick someone up and not going by Virgin as it would be after 9.15pm that we come back.

If the ticket office is closed and the ticket you want is not available from the machine, then according to a strict interpretation of the rules you should buy a ticket up to the value of the ticket you want to buy and then get it exchanged/excessed on the train or at your destination. However given how much faffing about that is for the guard and yourself, considering this isn't a PF area and Northern are happy to sell on board, you should have no problems buying the fare you want on board.
