Just to balance peoples complaints about RPI's behaviour and why prosecuting authorities have heard it all before
Yesterday I was on Tramlink
At the platform there were 5 inspectors giving penalty fares to 5 people who did not have tickets from 1 tram
They then got on another tram and within 60 seconds had another fare evader

Point well made and does not surprise me - their are definitely people for whom 'pay when challenged' is their default option. I have known people take this view who I have worked with etc and who to the best of my knowledge have no great shortage of ability to pay their required fares.

I don't get why they didn't just offer a contactless bank card and claim to have touched in with it.

Its not that surprising that fare evasion is high on Tramlink. Frequent stops, no ticket gates, usually no onboard staff.

Yeah, it's a common tactic of the RPIs, where they can they all get on at each individual door and catch as many as they can, the challenge is as they move an foot away from the door to sweep through customers they always manages to be one or two who slip out behind the RPIs, I've seen respectable looking business men and women who obviously didn't want to get off at that stop slip out and get away without paying the £1.65 fare.
It's a system that can, will and continue to be abused. It's impossible to fix and makes these hard ball tactics by the RPIs very necessary

The "Hectors" (i.e. inspectors) on the Manchester Metrolink system also adopt similar tactics, but will also keep a sharp lookout for anyone suddenly deciding to exit a tram when encountering a ticket inspection at a particular stop.

Contrast this to my late night Southeastern service to Woolwich Arsenal. It’s about 11pm, we’re stopped at Maze Hill for a minute or two with the doors open, and the driver announces that passengers should have their tickets ready as there are inspectors boarding at Greenwich.

About twenty people leave the train immediately.

There were of course no inspectors!

Contrast this to my late night Southeastern service to Woolwich Arsenal. It’s about 11pm, we’re stopped at Maze Hill for a minute or two with the doors open, and the driver announces that passengers should have their tickets ready as there are inspectors boarding at Greenwich.
