Hello, I recently got a letter for fare evasion with the intention to prosecute - having the chance to give my side of the story.
Basically I travelled without a valid rail card which had expired about 6 weeks previous but couldn't check this on the journey due to issues getting on my account and connectivity issues, I was given details to upload my railcard when I got home and it was not valid so this sent me a letter yesterday. (Jounrney:22 Jan 25 / Railcard Expired 22 Nov 24)
Genuinely believed it was in date, and booked using trainline which saves your preference to use a railcard in the booking so hadn't given it much thought for 2 years when booking
Please proof read my reply:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my sincere apologies for traveling without a valid ticket on the above journey. I fully understand the seriousness of this issue and take complete responsibility for my actions.
On the day in question, I had booked the tickets using Trainline where the railcard option is already added (having used a railcard for multiple years) and printed them. I had a ticket for travel but could not produce my railcard, which I believed to be valid, due to connection issues while on the train and difficulty accessing my account. The revenue officer provided me with a printout containing a link to upload my railcard once I could access the app.
On returning home, and once I gained access to my email account, I learned that my railcard had expired on 13/11/24. I wrongfully believed my railcard was still valid and had not expired before the date of travel. This was a genuine oversight on my part and not an attempt to avoid paying the correct fare.
As a neurodivergent individual with ADHD, this affects my ability to manage administrative tasks and contributes to occasional accidental errors such as this. I appreciate that this does not excuse my mistake, I take full responsibility and deeply regret any inconvenience this has caused to Thameslink. I will ensure this does not happen again, especially since learning about the detrimental effects this has on the rail industry.
This incident has caused me considerable anxiety, and I respectfully ask that you consider allowing me to settle this matter out of court by paying any outstanding fare and any administrative costs. I am fully committed to resolving this matter quickly and cooperatively.
Please accept my sincere apologies once more. I have learned a difficult lesson from this experience and can assure you that it will not be repeated.
I look forward to your response and resolving this as soon as possible.
Yours faithfully,
Thank you for any replies

Journey was Farringdon to Peterborough

Also worth mentioning that any prosecution would have serious ramifications on my career/ likely dismissal due to the nature of the job
