Doing the above journey on 30th April. Cheapest day return with a Railcard is £28. Is this the cheapest ticket possible?

It's difficult to say whether a particular ticket is the absolute cheapest but I'd recommend using the forum's own ticketing site as this is highly likely to be able to sell you the cheapest ticket that meets your needs.

When you say "cheapest day return", do you want flexible tickets? Or are you happy to be tied to specific trains?

If you want flexibility, it's going to cost you quite a bit more than £28, even with a Railcard. That's assuming you want to take the direct train, rather than to travel via London (which might be cheaper in some circumstances).

Splitting at Leicester and/or Peterborough often brings the price down for Advance fares.

The cheapest split could be at all sorts of places, such as Melton Mowbray etc; the forum's site has all these programmed into it.

So there is no need to look for splits at these places; just search for the overall journey using our site, and we'll find it for you.

(In the event that anyone ever finds a cheaper combination, do let us know, and we can usually fix it within 24 hours)

Travelling the route often and knowing the pricing, where I usually end up with an absolute fistful of split advances at places like Oakham and Melton Mowbray, I'd be surprised if split advances get you a cheaper deal than that on a Wednesday. Another vote for the forum site though.
