FAM query

Hi all,

A mate of mine, not on this forum, has asked me today if I knew of an answer to the below query. I'm of the view it should be fine, but a more definite answer would be better. So it's over to the fares and ticketing gurus on here:

Travelling from Leominster to Hull with one of his kids, who is 3 and a half. As it's cheaper to travel for 1 adult and 1 child than just 1 adult. T&Cs say 5-15 apparently though for kids on a FAM.

Can he add his 3 and a half year old to the FAM and still qualify for the relevant discounts?

I hope that makes sense and look forward to any help with this.

Yes - it is fine to take a 3 year old as a child using a Friends and Family railcard. If it is an Advance ticket it is the only way to get a seat for the child - my three year old son would not take too kindly to sitting on my lap for a 2 hour train journey

The railcard website includes this paragraph

"All kids under 5 travel free - and each adult may take up to two 'under fives' with them. However, if the only child in the group is under five, you'll need to purchase a discounted child ticket to qualify for the adult Railcard discount."
