Presumably it's the idea that you can tell a person's ethnicity from their name.

Ever heard of Muhammad Ali, Yusuf Islam, Charlie Williams, Freddie Mercury?

Firstly - as a person who works in the ME for 1 week per month, I have more exposure to ethnic names than most people.

So I find this (faux) outrage slightly amusing. if the statement was signed by a name such as Mary Bell and I had used the phrase "(making an assumption from the name) had changed sex" Would you have had a similar shocked reaction. I doubt it.

Of course I have heard "of Muhammad Ali, Yusuf Islam, Charlie Williams, Freddie Mercury". Please do not insult my intelligence by trying to imply that there are not ethnic orientated names. In my 25 years in KSA and I have never met a local called Paul, John, Fred, Bob......

It is indeed. I wonder if my name is 'black enough' or if I would be assumed to be white?

So let me get this right najaB, if you dealt with a man and he appeared to you as your average White Anglo Saxon and then you got a statement signed by Ahmed Youssef. You would not wonder if a mistake had been made?????

Are there such things as "ethnic names", I asumed ethnicity and name were two entirely different concepts.

So you think the outrage displayed was not genuine, are you psychic?

As for insulting your intelligence, I don't think you need my help with that.

I'm guessing that there is not as much racial diversity in KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia?) as in many other countries, I think in 25 years in the USA, France, Australia or any number of other countries you would have met many locals with names that didn't fit your idea of ethnically appropriate.

I regret to have to say this but I detect an undercurrent of racism in your remarks.

Nope. I might raise an eyebrow for a moment, but I know enough people who have converted to Islam and taken Islamic names to know that it's not uncommon. In fact, just putting that name into a Google Image search returns a whole spectrum of skin tones and ethnicities.

I certainly wouldn't accuse a company of criminal malfeasance based on it.

Undercurrent? More like a spring tide!

So did you actually meet this "average White Anglo Saxon"?

Wrong guy Dale, I work for a company based in Houston, I have travelled to the USA 2-3 times year for 25 years. I lived in Aus for a year and 1 week a month travel to other locations in Europe (Norway week before last). I have come across very few names that I would not describe as local.

I seem to have edited out part of my last post and lost it :(

Last point - then I really am finished, our complaint is against (for the want of a better description and as I don't want to use names or badge numbers) the white guy who my Daughter claimed (I have put claimed to avoid the need for anyone to respond) was rude and aggressive and was the only person she dealt with.

Apologies to anyone I have offended.

Thanks for any advice given.

I will not post again.

I'm surprised that is the case, however you do say "I have come across very few names that I would not describe as local." so by your own admittance you have come across some. I suspect the people you meet on your travels are not exactly a cross section of the local populations.

I've been thinking back and from my experience, which is less global than yours, I can recall several examples from school and work without thinking too hard not to mention all those from the worlds of entertainment and sport.

I seem to recall you said this before.

I see how this is coming across. This is last time I will post.

True DaleCooper especially in America I mainly work with a very very small cross section of society. Similar but less so in Italy, NL or Norway. I would say quite wide in the ME, it is locals and either Indian's, Pakistani's or Philippino's.

However as a not too serious exercise. Write down everyone you know. Either personally, professionally or pick your favourite football team. I bet you will be hard pressed to come up with 5% of people who don't match their name.

I didn't "meet him" per se, but I was with my Daughter when she asked him for his badge number.

I was just being polite and replying to your post :)

The fact here is that it's unwise to make any assumptions about a persons ethnicity based on their name. It certainly isn't going to be clear cut enough to base a case of dishonesty or anything else on.

If you feel that your daughter has grounds for complaint about the way she was dealt with, I suggest that you pursue that complaint through the proper channels.

I think that everything that can be said about this incident has already been said, so I am going to lock the thread now. If anyone feels that there is new information that they feel they can add, or if you want to report any new development, please contact any of the forum staff and we will consider reopening the thread.
