Hi everyone,
I was recently travelling on the DLR and, as I was leaving the station, a revenue inspection was happening.
I tapped my phone on the inspector’s device, which seemed to go through OK. I then tapped out seconds later.
I then received an email from TfL saying they were charging me £16.30 due to a “failed revenue inspection”
On looking into this, it looks like I tapped the wrong card from my apple wallet with the revenue inspector. This happened because I manually called up the card for revenue inspection, rather than relying on the express travel card facility which I usually do.
I have been charged both for the journey I took (on the right card) and for the “failed revenue inspection” (on the wrong card).
Had he told me the card was invalid or challenged me, I would have been able to produce the correct card immediately. Indeed, he will have seen me tap out (with the right card) moments later.
(1) Is there any mileage in challenging this?
(2) is it usual practice to not tell someone they’ve failed a revenue inspection?
(3) is there any risk in challenging this resulting in a more substantial issue like a penalty fare?
