That would be interesting on a tilting service!

Hardly. London Euston to Birmingham New Street only takes 1hr 24mins (Even London Midland can only spin it out to about 2.5 hours on their semi-fast services), so while it is certainly a bonefide Intercity service, it certainly isn't "long distance" in terms of journey time.

London to Edinburgh/Glasgow or London to Plymouth/Penzance is about the shortest journey length that is feasible for a sleeper train to ensure passengers get a reasonable amount of sleep and to attract users to the service, even travelling at a bit of a leisurely pace!

There did indeed used to be such a thing as a Bristol to Edinburgh sleeper. I'd like to see such a service reinstated, I think it would have potential. Extended back to start at Cardiff, and running via Bristol (The slightly circuitous route would be perfectly acceptable for a sleeper service, which needs to call at as many major conurbations as possible to ensure good patronage).

Hmm thats a good idea. I also wish we could accept Solo and Electron cards, many of our passengers have these and wheel out "its all i've got". "i never realised", "you mean to say you dont accept it?" and "I've used it before" excuses! and as they are doing short hops they know its unlikely they will get a TIR or an UFN!

Every train has a 'Railworks' carriage installed. By integrating the Railworks system with on board cameras positioned around the train, you drive you're own way to your destination!

The seats come installed with metal clamps and an electric shock facility, so if some plastered footballing idiot decides to try and be a joker and mess up the facility......ouch!

Enough seats to match the number of passengers, i.e. more coaches than the inadequate 2 car dmu's used on many busy routes. At least one toilet in each coach ( 2 for retention toilets since 1 is insufficient for units on high mileage diagrams).
And as for suggestions about better food provision (Subway, McDonalds, etc.) - how do you fit this into a 156, 158 or 153 ? Removing 10+ seats would not help the overcrowding problems.

on the Heart of Wales today, the trolley attednant was overheard to say "there is a vicar on the train today, he'll be working his way along the carriage in a few minutes" !!

Mind you he also kept saying "is there anything you need" to everyone, and "who wants anything off the Lucky trolley" - so he was clearly a humourous type !

ATMs hasn't been done, but DB (and private regional rail operators in mainland Europe) have been putting TVMs on regional trains for a long time. They are often used to sell tickets to those who have boarded at unstaffed halts, but some private rail operators allow a full range of tickets to be bought from them at all stations.

TVMs, vending machines.. all things I've seen abroad. We really are behind here, although I know that both types of machine would probably be wrecked in about five minutes here.

When you finally get to pay for travel with your 'paywave' debit/credit card, it would make sense to have machines on trains - backed up with hefty penalties for being caught without having paid.

I remember making a call on a payphone on a train in the late 80s or early 90s. Can't remember exactly when, but it was basically a standard BT payphone (or one that took cards at least) to look at.

I really doubt we'll ever see them again. If a train has Wi-Fi, you could always make a call using VoIP - or just email/IM someone.

I also remember using the BT Payphones-think they just took BT phone cards-some Northern trains still have the signs but no phone! They used the mobile phone network anyway so no different that using mobile phone-often cut off due to poor coverage on the network.
