I use the F5 button to refresh the pages, as this is very useful on the Quiz Forum, when a group of you are participating. However, today has seen the page change as normal when the F5 button is pressed, but only the top part of the screen that shows the control section appears, with a total blank below. All the other buttons from F1 to F12 are functioning correctly.

Has anyone any advice on how to bring back "F5" matters back to normal, as this will now preclude my appearance on one particular quiz, where the ability to respond with some speed to a previous posting is essential. Please bear in mind that I am 67 and still a novice in computer matters.

Have you tried closing your browser (that means all windows) and re-opening it?

Next thing to try after that is re-booting your computer.

I can't say I have had it with RUK, but Facebook is notorious for doing it now, and usually refreshing the page again is enough to give it the kick up the preverbial that it needs :)

You know I needed to close a whole business down once because the F5 key broke, it locked on on a key emulator, resulting in free games jumping on and off constantly.

"Closed due to F5" Was posted on the door...

Does Ctrl+R work (it does the same thing)?

Doing this gives me exactly what I reported when using the F5 button on its own in my original posting.

What browser are you using? Sometimes Chrome stops me from refreshing using F5

I'd certainly try it in another browser to see if the problem is resolved in it to at least narrow down the problem.

I'd be inclined to try clearing the cache...

For Chrome, click on the spanner, then it's Settings -> Show Advanced Settings -> Clear Browsing Data

Change the dropdown to "the beginning of time" and only have the "Empty the Cache" checkbox ticked, then click on the Clear Browsing Data button.

What I am now getting, after pressing the F5 button (and the other option of Control and R) is the Railforums symbol at the top left-hand corner, with the usual headings in a line underneath (New Posts, etc), then an advert under that.

The rest of the screen under all that stubbornly remains completely blank.

Does this new information help ?

Does anything come up at the bottom (i.e. a bar saying "Sending request...")? At the top of the window in the list of tabs, does it show the RUK logo next to the page title, a blank piece of paper, or a spinning circle-like object?

Not as you describe here....I still am in the same position as I reported in posting # 13.

Hmmm... Hard to say then..

If you can, download CCleaner from file hippo and run the cleanup. Then go to the registry tools and analyse and clean that out too..

Have you installed anything of late and then got rid of it pretty much soon after?

As requested, I downloaded CCleaner, version 3.21.1767 and installed and ran it. Then the registry tools advice was followed. (Note that I have Norton 360 version 6 and Uniblue Powersuite Pro 2013 installed as part of my "belt and braces" protection).

Nothing has changed. I am still in exactly the same position as I reported on posting # 13.

I want to thank everyone who has tried to help, but I have booked our usual computer engineer to come on Monday morning to sort it out as I am still within the one-month period following their last major annual update service which is free of charge in that period.

Just to update you, the computer engineer came this morning at 0830 and said...."Not to worry, a simple thing to fix, will have you back to normal in half-an-hour"

At 0930, one full hour later, a very puzzled engineer apologised profusely and said that he would have to take my desktop HP Pavilion away with him and said I was still covered by the full service they did last month, so there will be no charge for the work. Another engineer had been rang by him and he brought a replacement computer to me to use whilst they have mine in their workshop.
