Off topic a little, but why is it that people bemaon paying their licence fee to the BBC (around £15 a month) but are happy to pay five or six times that amount to Sky...

More bad news is that the BBC are only showing highlights of the Canadian GP (which has been by far the best grand prix in recent seasons) this weekend, because they wanted the rights to the Spanish (Barcelona), Monaco (Monte Carlo), European (Valencia) and British (Silverstone) Grand Prix.

I can't understand this. They know all too well how popular Canada is among viewers. They could quite easily have opted out of the Spanish pair (OK, so Spain itself was better than usual but it's got nothing on some other circuits) and instead chosen Montreal, and then to even up the numbers Melbourne. Surely this would have a sensible choice to give all the most popular races to the common viewer?

Among other reasons, the BBC isn't a commercial organisation, you get a lot more out of a Sky subscription, you can (largely) choose what you can access - and in practice the amount you suggest ("five or six times [£15 p/m]") is very rare.

They picked three at a time alternating with Sky picking three. The BBC apparently went first and picket Monaco, Britain and Brazil. The last two I can understand, but Monaco is a poor choice imo. Having picked those they had to account for only being allowed to show a maximum of three races in a row, so to have the Canadian GP (which potentially clashes with the football) they couldn't have the European GP (which doesn't clash).

Back before the season started there was piece (written by Jake Humphrey iirc) that stated why the BBC had the races it does, and it all made sense.

The BBC does have the right to show the full race later in the day for all the races, not just the ones it shows live; it chose not to excercise this.

As for Sky - there is no way I am going to pay one penny of my money to any business associated with Murdoch. If the races go fully over to Sky, I will not watch them. Simple as that.

I'm happy to pay five times more to sky as I get approx 200-300 channels, if not more. compare to 2 channels? Sounds good value to me. I pay five times the bbc licence fee, I also get unlimited broadband and anytime calls in that price.

Indeed. I pay £40 pm for the basic sky package + the documentary channels, truly unlimited broadband, anytime calls and line rental. I know which one I consider value for money.

How can they be self-financing? Where would they get the money from?

The BBC may produce that, but actually the TV license allows you to legally view upto 55 (or so) TV channels as they are broadcast.

But at the end of the day, regardless of how much you spend, you can only watch one thing at a time.

If you have the HD pack Sky Sports F1 is provided free of charge.

You can watch the Sky F1HD channel "for free"* if you have Sky and atleast one of the Sports package and the HD package, or you have Virgin Media and the sports package. Although you can only get it in HD if you have the Sky HD package.

*It's only free if you are not paying for it.

I neither have the sports or HD packs so I can't watch the F1 where I live. However my folks have the HD pack so ill just watch it round there if its not live on the BBC.

BBC commentary about 5 hours behind the pictures

Plus it's Legard this weekend, who confused a Lotus for a Caterham (how?), so I'm watching RTL's German commentary which is better, even though I barely understand it.

even remembering these other stations, what are the 11 national radio stations? I only have 5 i can access, 2 of which i wouldnt even consider tuning to.
200-300 channels plus radio, unlimited broadband, and landline calls is still a far better value for money deal, Some of the specialist interest channels are worth the money alone.
And having the sports channels saves me god knows how much in going to the pub to watch the footy/ rugby/ various motor racing, therefore saving my money and health, meaning i am not spending god knows how much on beer, and taxis home from the pub. Sky sports definitely pays for itself in that respect!

I usually sync 5 Live commentary with RTL pictures but the F1 commentary was online only.

Different liveries. He confused the black and gold Lotus (ex-Renault) for the green and yellow Caterham (ex-Team Lotus).

those ive placed in bold cant be picked up on my equipment, at least sky provide the equipment for me to access their channels that i pay for!
