Extra trains to cope with demand

Now, I am always pleasantly surprised when TOCs run extra train to cope with extra demand, and my question is, how frequent an occurrence is it.
I personally only really hear about it when it comes up on here, which I guess isn't every time such a thing happens.

I would think with football it would be quite common, I know when Aston Villa used to to play there used to be a Football Special.

I know if the Midlands Grand National is on at Uttoxeter East Midlands Trains regularly run extra Uttoxeter to Derby/Stoke-on-Trent trains which don't call at intermediate stations and when the Grand National is on I think there may be extra trains.

Used to play where? I'm not really sure what you mean by this comment. Chelsea recently hired a charter service when they played away at Burnley which ran from Kings Cross.

SWT run extras for major rugby matches at Twickenham (probably only major international matches) and I think they run additional services around Royal Ascot.

FGW run extras (albeit often at the cost of cancelling / reducing other services) for Glastonbury festival and (I think) racing at Cheltenham

SE Trains usually run a few late night / early hours services on new year's night from central London - certainly in the London area. Not sure how many other London area operators do likewise

One that seems to spring to mind is Reading-Basingstoke going down to hourly to allow for enhanced frequency / longer trains on the Henley branch during the Regatta.

I think the sentence highlighted would be better phrased as:

When Aston Villa used to play, there used to be a football special

I'm not entirely sure what exactly is meant... maybe the football special no longer runs?

At Witton station when Aston Villa played there used to be extra trains which were from Birmingham New Street to Walsall and back which were marked "Football Special" on the running boards but I am not sure if they still run but they were run by Class 150s which have long since gone from the chase line.

Central Trains/London Midland used to run football specials from Witton to New Street for Villa home games. These stopped running a couple of months back. This is what thenorthern must mean.

EDIT: Well the man himself answered, but the extra New Street to Walsall trains haven't ran for years.

EMT run a fleet of specials for Lincoln Christmas market as well as regularly for football fixtures in the east midlands

I'd say so. Northern also ran a special from Oxford Road to Lime Street after an evening kick off in the league cup last season.

There used to be a Shotts to Glasgow Central via Whifflet service that was run on advent Sundays only as until 2012 there was no Sunday trains on the Shotts line beyond West Calder.

I think the extra trains were to allow people to go Christmas Shopping but as the line now has a regular Sunday service I think they no longer run.

When the Open Golf championship is on in July and the course is located close to a station, extra services are always put on eg Royal Lytham, Troon, Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) Carnoustie to name a few.
Wonder if the old St Andrews line would be rebuilt ?

Another FGW related extra is when the Dawlish airshow is on, when more trains stop at Dawlish and extras put on from Exeter.

I would say Newbury races will have more trains stop there

Also SE run extra services during the Marathon and have run extras on Charlton home games (kinda random) They also run extra services for Bonfire night (Blackheath fireworks) and various other events.

Not just Glastonbury. This year they've run extras to Charlbury (for the Wilderness festival) and Kingham (for Alex James' Big Feastival). Amusingly the latter, on their up journey, were set-down only at Charlbury...

Extra services run as shuttles between Reading and Newbury Racecourse (reversing in the loop platform), additional stops on the Bedwyn and some HST services from the West Country are also made.

FGW Website stating additional trains for Bath Xmas Shopping and for Rugby Wales v South Africa at Cardiff. ATW advertising Cardiff Bay Shuttle extended into the evening in the run up to Xmas. The service normally finishes at approx. 1900 on Sundays.

I am not sure if this necessarily counts but in times of disruption London Midland often additionally call at Longport when East Midlands Trains can't and before I have been at Lonport and a Northern Rail train has made an unadvertised call there consisting of the driver putting his head out the window saying " the signal man has asked me to stop to pick you lot up" and then stopping to allow us to board.

On the same subject when I was at Stoke-on-Trent this morning the 07:00 Manchester-London which normally only calls at Stockport called at Stoke-on-Trent today and I am not sure why.

FGW have been running extra trains between Westbury and Bristol Temple Meads this Saturday, departing at XX:02 past the hour, calling at Trowbridge and Bradford-On-Avon pick up only, and Bath Spa set down only. The unit for the 12:02 departure was a SWT 159 so I wonder if FGW have managed to lease a few units from SWT for use on Saturdays for the next few weeks. Most of the usual services to Cardiff and Great Malvern on this line have also been strengthened to 5 car. All those Christmas shoppers going to the market! All trains have been very well loaded.
