I got into a conversation with a teenage family member about a PF they had received for buying a ticket online once their journey had started.
The background:
They possessed a valid physical ticket from A to B, but teenagers being teenagers their plans changed, and they needed to travel further. They therefore went online and bought a ticket from B to C. They were pulled at the gate line at their destination (C) and PF'd for buying once the journey had started, after showing their original physical ticket and their "top up" on their phone screen.
The issue will be that the journey for the online ticket will not have been "started", I presume.
The PF has been paid, and chalked up to experience.
Apologies I don't know the precise destinations, but it was Great Northern, and I suspect station B was Cambridge.
What action should they take if a last minute journey plan change like this happens again?
