Extending a 16-17 Saver

My daughter renewed her saver in July, so it ends on her birthday. With the new policy allowing a saver to run for a year is there anything that would prevent her buying a new saver the day before her birthday, even though she still has her current saver at that point?

If you mean no later than the day before her 18th birthday, that's fine, and it'll be valid for one further year from date of purchase. Change was effective 17th August 2026. Doesn't matter that an existing 16-17 Saver railcard is held and that the two may overlap.

BBC said:
Eighteen-year-olds will be able to buy half-price train tickets for most services when railcard rules are changed later this month, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced.

It's an extension of the 16-17 Saver railcard which currently expires when the holder turns 18. From 17 August, they will be valid for a full year from the date of purchase.

It means 17-year-olds will be able to buy the railcard up until the day before they turn 18, making it valid until the day before they turn 19.

I'm now wondering why ATOC are sending expiry reminders (incorrectly) informing us my 17 year old son can't buy another one.

Really?! Can you post a pic of same, and the date when it was sent? Obviously, please be sure to obscure any name or ID info.

Probably because they haven't updated their email templates to take into account these changes. Sadly the left and right hands of lots of organisations don't talk to each other...
